Labor secretary Chao pushes career training

...Chao also echoed Bush's assertion that U.S. job growth is ro bust, with 4.6 million new jobs created in the last 2½ years.

The AFL-CIO questioned that rosy picture, noting that gains in the economy are not being evenly distributed.

Ohio, the labor federation said, has lost 186,400 jobs since Bush took over, experienced a 9 percent drop in median household income between 2000 and 2004 (inflation-adjusted), and seen personal bankruptcy filings during that period jump by 68 percent.

"This is a direct result of the misguided economic stewardship of the Bush administration," AFL-CIO chief economist Ron Blackwell said. "It's an assault on the middle class."...

Private survey pegs job loss higher than state's claims

Ohio lost more than 32,000 manufacturing jobs last year, according to the latest survey of a manufacturing directory.

The survey also showed that Ohio lost 93 manufacturing plants last year and more than 840 plants since 2000. The current number of plants is 21,634.

The job losses, reported by the Ohio Manufacturers Directory, are much higher than the manufacturing-job declines reported by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. That state agency has said manufacturing employment skidded by about 5,000 jobs in 2005.

The directory's job losses also are much higher than national reports, which say that manufacturing employment in Ohio has been fairly stable this past year, after experiencing sharp losses in earlier years, according to the National Association of Manufacturers...

1. Bush calls for lifting cap on special H-1B visas
MAPLEWOOD, Minnesota (Reuters) - President George W. Bush on Thursday called on Congress to raise the cap on the so-called H-1B visas that allow companies to fill high tech jobs with foreign workers.

"The problem is, is that Congress has limited the number of H-1B visas," Bush said in a speech.

"I think it's a mistake not to encourage more really bright folks who can fill the jobs that are having trouble being filled in America, to limit their number. So I call upon Congress to be realistic and reasonable to raise that cap," he said.

5. So what he's saying is:
... there are no 'really bright folks' in the country who are out of work and looking for jobs. I guess all of those unemployed Americans out there with B.A.s and Ph.D.s are just too lazy to look for work.

"... really bright folks who can fill the jobs that are having trouble being filled in America ..."

And again, the lack of grammar is astounding - but then, we're used to that by now.

3. Chao is an idiot...litterally!!!
Have you ever watched her at a Congressional hearing? I HAVE! When the Labor Dept was rewriting the standards, and many were concerned that thousands would no longer be eligible for O/T she testified before Congress. This dimwitt brought her "assistant" along, and EVERY SINGLE QUESTION she directed to her asst.! It was sooo obvious that she didn't know a damn thing about what was going on, and just had the job because of cronyism!

Whatever she schoed, someone else told her what to say!

4. She's the wife of some prominent rethug, right?
That obviously makes her a competent Labor Secretary.

After all, in a Bush administration, Labor Sacretaries need to meet a very high standard.

NOT!!!!!

6. Or you could just kiss up to the Bush administration, right Elaine?
As long as you remain completely loyal, you are guaranteed to keep your job. Prospects are good for a very cushy private sector job when you leave.

15. career training?
For what? Nazis want to offshore every job that can be offshored, and inshore (bring in immigrants) every job that can't. Train for what? The only safe job in America is evidently that of a CEO.

16. Sure that will work..
:eyes:

Except if you are a 48 yr old auto worker with a kid in college, a car payment, a mortgage, maybe a chronic health problem or two..
People like that cannot just "go back to school" and get retrained while the rest of their life is put on "pause"..

People like that will HAVE to take a few crummy jobs (leaves even less time for any re-training) to make ends meet, and pray that no one gets hurt or sick.

This is just like everything this admins does.. offer some phony "plan" to people they know cannot afford the time to even participate in.
