The virulently anti-gay Westboro Baptist Church from Topeka, Kansas, announced Feb. 3 that it would picket the funeral of civil rights icon Coretta Scott King, widow of Martin Luther King Jr.

Mrs. King’s funeral is set for Feb. 7 from noon to 3 p.m. at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Lithonia, a suburb of Atlanta, officials with the King Center have confirmed. It is expected to attract thousands of mourners.

Westboro Baptist Church, headed by Fred Phelps and known for its “God Hates Fags” signs carried at protests, said it is picketing the funeral because Mrs. King believed in equality for gay people.

“WBC has warned Mrs. King for more than 10 year that by endorsing the homosexual agenda she was bringing down the wrath of God upon herself, her family and the black civil rights movement. She is an ingrate — unthankful and holy,” the church said in a press release.

deceased, dripping with kindness, just invited them into the service acting like they were dear friends. Then invited them to the gathering afterwards for food. No hostility, no matter what Phelps said or did people would act like he was an old friend.

He showed up a couple of years ago outside our (small) church. We were all encouraged to completely ignore him. Partly because he's simply odious, and partly b/c he likes the interaction, and attempts to use it for lawsuits... claiming he was attacked.

So I imagine even kindness wouldn't reach him. He'd use the occasion to shout and scream hateful things throughout the events.

What's particularly disturbing is that his whole entourage is his family -- including young grandkids. To see children spouting such vicious hate is probably the ugliest thing I've seen.

I can't help but wonder if the Almighty might be using Fred Phelps and Company as a means of frustrating the ambitions of the Radical Religious Right. They certainly won't be making many friends for themselves by picketing Mrs King's funeral.

The Radical Religious Right has been trying for years to build bridges to the Afro-American religious leadership. The Radical Religious Right (The leadership of which is mostly caucasian) has had to fight an uphill battle; the Afro-Americans rightly remember the RRR's leadership's predecessors as upholders of white supremacy, social inequality, and disenfranchisement of Afro-Americans. So here comes Preacher Phelps and his crowd, hungry for publicity and headlines, ready to reinforce those old perceptions.

No doubt "Faux" and other right-wing touts and propagandists will frantically try to spin away Phelps' actions by claiming that Phelps is somehow "leftist."

Fred Phelps and is army of gay-hating flying monkeys intentionally protest funerals to pick a fight. If someone hits them then that person and the person's organization are targets of law suits. He and his church had the gall to start protedting military funerals in Oklahoma. His "rationale" was that God was punishing the military for the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy or some s$%t.

I think he is also planning to protest the church of the preacher who was arrested in Oklahoma City for trying to pick up an under cover male detective for sex. The preacher, of course, is of the Christian Right and is anti-gay.

The "God" that they worship is not the God of the Bible; they even say as much in their website and in their doctrine. These people believe that they are the chosen ones and no others will come into God's grace.
