Indian leader seeks federal aid
WASHINGTON - American Indian tribes are not getting enough federal help to stem the flow of illegal immigrants - and resulting drug trafficking and crime - across reservation borders, Joe Garcia of Ohkay Owingeh, formerly San Juan Pueblo, said in his first major address here as the incoming president of the National Congress of American Indians.

Garcia, elected to a two-year term as NCAI president in November, used the annual State of the Indian Nations address Thursday to focus on problems of crime, health care, education and American Indian Trust issues, ignoring the scandal of one-time American Indian lobbyist Jack Abramoff.

"We don't want to dwell on that," Garcia said in response to a reporter's question afterwards. "There are a lot greater needs we have to deal with."
