ACLU Leader Criticizes Patriot Act

DETROIT -- The executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union on Saturday highlighted what he described as a growing effort to examine and challenge the scope of the Patriot Act.

Anthony Romero, who traveled to the state for the ACLU of Michigan's annual dinner, took aim at Attorney General John Ashcroft and other Bush administration officials for their strident defense of the anti-terrorism legislation adopted by Congress shortly after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

"The Bush and Ashcroft assault on civil liberties has been relentless and insatiable," Romero said ahead of his keynote address at the dinner. "We need to engage this debate."

because if we don't, our rights will be down the tube. Ashcroft is already targeting environmental groups, which I predict will be the next group targeted for illegal detention and other violations of the Constitution.
