Bush Budget to Cut Deeper Into Education
By BEN FELLER, AP Education Writer

WASHINGTON - President Bush's budget would cut money for education, the second straight time has he has sought less school spending after a first term of steady increases.

The Education Department would get $54.4 billion for discretionary spending in the fiscal year starting Oct. 1. That would amount to a cut of $3.7 billion, or 6.4 percent, from this year.

Bush would eliminate 42 education programs deemed unnecessary or inefficient, including some money for the arts, technology, parent-resource centers and drug-free schools.

Overall, Education Secretary Margaret Spellings said, education has fared well under Bush, with larger percentage increases than any other domestic area outside of national security. But the big increases came early in Bush's first term after he won bipartisan support for his education law.

1. Well Bush didn't need an education...
so why does anyone else? I mean, heck, everyone else has a powerful, well-connected father who can get them into Yale with SAT scores that wouldn't pass muster for most community colleges....right?

3. "Who needs ejumacashun?"
Is what Bush says when his goals are to:

- Have most everyone working at Wal-Mart
- The rest can work at Mickey D's
- Those who don't wanna take part in the "booming" economy can enlist and kill middle easterners for their oil.

:grr:

4. Of course...when you have an uneducated fool running the country!
You can't and should expect a dumbass like George W. Bush, JR. to care about education. After all these cuts are coming under the administration of a pResident who was interviewed on the Good Morning show with millions of people watching (Pickles sitting by his side), and said, "MY WIFE SPEAKS BETTER ENGLISH THEM ME".

On that day I marked George W. Bush, JR. as the dumbest and most useless pResident that the USA has ever had.

5. What is Spellings smokin' these days?
Overall, Education Secretary Margaret Spellings said, education has fared well under Bush, with larger percentage increases than any other domestic area outside of national security.

Well, DUH! The other domestic areas were cut or frozen. Way to spin this into "good news".

I'd like to eliminate 43, as deemed unnecessary, inefficient AND inept.

7. What it means for my school district:
Technology funds: This would be the Title IID money that we currently use to pay for staff development to train teachers on using computers in the classroom. We have a program where we train teachers to use the laptop labs that are available in their buildings. It's been very successful. So, naturally, it's gone.

Parent-resource centers: This money is used to fund parent training nights at our schools. We teach them how to help their kids learn to read, to study, to schedule their time, and to provide more time for teachers to meet with parents about their kids. Good program. Of course - toast.

Drug-free schools. We've used this to pay for school resource officers and social workers. Poof!

Thanks, George.
