Illegal immigrant workers sue Wal-Mart
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&ncid=&e=7&u=/ap/20031109/ap_on_bi_ge/wal_mart_arrests

FREEHOLD, N.J. - Nine illegal immigrants who worked as janitors at Wal-Mart until they were arrested during federal raids last month have sued the company, accusing it of discrimination.

The nine say they were paid lower wages and offered fewer benefit because they are Mexicans, and they accuse Wal-Mart and its cleaning contractors of failing to pay for overtime, withhold taxes or make required workers' compensation contributions.

Their lawsuit, filed Wednesday in Superior Court in Freehold, seeks more than $200,000 in back pay.

4. They should damn it!
Our own system can't seem to do anything about the greedy corp bastards! Think back to Tyson in 2001, their defense was to use another rule that states it is considered discrimination to question the validity of documents provided by immigrant workers. Many of the fake docs of the Tyson workers were obvious duplicates, but the managers and Tyson were acquitted. The defense worked!

I hate to bash corps, as they are the hands that feed us, but when are we going to say enough? We "legals" are starting to be exploited as much as the illegal immigrants by the likes Wal-Mart, Tyson, IBP, etc.
US CEOs and upper management making 450+ times the rank & file. Heck CEOs in Germany, the next highest in the list, is only at 47 times.
We've been robbed of DB pensions and given 401Ks instead. Oh great, so now they can take advantage of me both as an employee and a shareholder. Sort of got us by the short hairs coming and going.
American workers should be outraged!
And who would have thought a few years ago that folks would be screaming, hey, that illegal took MY job! (Immigrant workers used to end up with the jobs nobody else wanted anyway). We will soon be fighting with them over these table scraps of the greedy bastards!

7. the one thing I've always felt
about the illegals, if we allow them to be exploited our day too will come that's why I've never jumped on the bandwagon of bashing them. Our day is right around the corner and from what I'm seeing it's already started.
Your 401k point is right on we should be outraged! The robber barron era is making it's way back.

9. Yep
This past summer a bunch of us were out on motorcycles, just touring around. While near Jefferson we decided to stop and walk the picket line with these folks and find out what was really going on with Tyson. (Came across all these big homemade signs in the county and got our curiosity going, they weren't getting much press at the time).

Came home and did a Google search on Tyson, shocked at what I found.
At the time, I was in corporate IT, one of the many making good money and not real involved with Unions or labor issues, too busy living my own "good" life.

Was a real eye opener and has made me both more aware and active. My change in attitude also brought me here to DU. You folks are great! I hope more folks become "enlightened" into what's happening to our country.

12. CEO's are the hands that feeds us?
how odd you should think this and dismiss the actual act of working?

14. Said Corporations
are the hands that feed us, and perhaps that cliche was the incorrect wording to use. Healthy, responsibly run corporations provide workers decent jobs. Please do not twist this around as looking for a hand-out or bashing all corporations as the collective evil...not what I intended.

6. Please add Tyson foods to boycott in support
of the folks in Jefferson WI, out for 9 months for much of the same reason as CA grocery workers.

11. They will yuck the customer
The sad fact is, if they end up losing the lawsuit, they will never have to actually pay the award. They will simply pass the cost on to the customer by either raising their prices or reducing their sales. It's a win/win situation.
