CNN/AP: Hotel deadline expires Tuesday for Katrina evacuees
Hotel deadline expires Tuesday for Katrina evacuees
Tuesday, February 7, 2006

HOUSTON, Texas (AP) -- Thousands of Hurricane Katrina evacuees who have been staying in hotels at FEMA's expense will have to pay their own way beginning Tuesday, unless they were able to arrange extensions from federal officials.

Hotel managers posted notices and slipped leaflets under evacuees' room doors informing them of the deadline.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency will allow those who received extensions to stay through February 13 or March 1, depending on their circumstances.

The agency authorized extensions for evacuees staying in more than 20,000 hotel rooms in more than 40 states. But about 5,000 evacuees nationwide did not contact the agency or were unable to get an extension.

"If they did not contact us or allow us to talk with them during our outreach efforts, we believe that they had a reason to do so," said the head of FEMA's transitional housing unit, Libby Turner....

NEW ORLEANS - Hauling everything he owned in a plastic garbage bag, Darryl Travis walked out of the chandeliered lobby of the Crowne Plaza, joining the exodus of Hurricane Katrina refugees evicted from their hotel rooms across the country Tuesday.

More than 4,500 evacuees were expected to check out of their government-paid hotel rooms Tuesday as the Federal Emergency Management Agency began cutting off money to pay for their stays.

Far more people — a total of more than 20,000 storm victims — were given extensions by FEMA until at least next week and possibly as long as March 1, said FEMA spokesman Butch Kinerney.

Brittany Brown, 21, wept as she explained that although she had been given an extension, eviction was now looming next week. She applied for a trailer in October and, although she keeps calling, her trailer has yet to show up.

5. It's not like these people have been living in the lap of luxury, mind you
Travis, 24, and his five childhood friends -- all in their 20s -- had been living on the floor of another evacuee's hotel room, never having registered. For months.

Yikes. Where's John Steinbeck when you need him?
