Bolton, Timmerman Nominated for Nobel Peace Prize; Swedish Leader Cites Efforts Exposing Iranian Nuclear Plans

WASHINGTON, Feb. 7 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Two Americans who played a major role in exposing Iran's secret nuclear weapons plans have been nominated for the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize.

United Nations Ambassador John Bolton and longtime Iran investigator Kenneth R. Timmerman were nominated for their repeated warnings and documentation of Iran's secret nuclear buildup and revealing Iran's "repeated lying" and false reports to the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Bolton was formerly U.S. Under Secretary for Arms Control and International Security and was author of the Proliferation Security Initiative, an international effort to interdict shipments of weapons of mass destruction and related materials, which led to the eventual breakup of the secret nuclear network directed by Pakistan nuclear scientist A. Q. Khan. Bolton repeatedly warned of Iran's nuclear plans.

Timmerman, an independent researcher, has written extensively on Iran's nuclear activities for more than 20 years. His report for the Simon Wiesenthal Center in 1992 first detailed Iran's ties to A.Q. Khan. His most recent book, "Countdown to Crisis: The Coming Nuclear Showdown with Iran," was published last year.

7. Hell, I'd nominate you now......
who do I write to? Or can I just call them up? Do they accept e-mails? What is their chat room name?

Is it like recommending a post, the more nominations the better your chance of actually winning the prize?

So many questions, so little time! :toast:

6. I was nominated, also
No one is "nominated" for a Nobel Prize. Remember that kooky doctor that said Terry Schaivo was not brain dead? He was "nominated" by some idiot Repuke Congressman from Florida. It is worthless to say that.

Timmerman is a right wing FREAK, not an "independent researcher." Can anybody be nominated for the Noble Prize?? Could I nominate my grandmother or are their rules on who gets to be nominated?

19. Per Ahlmark also insisted that Iraq had WMD's.
For a European, Ahlmark makes a plausible neocon.

Anyone can get nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize.
Some conservative Swedish legislator nominated Little Boots
himself in 2002.

22. Nomination is supposed to be secret, and it means very little
From Wikipedia: Nominations for the prize may be made by a broad array of qualified individuals, including former recipients, members of national assemblies and congresses, university professors, international judges, and special advisors to the prize committee. In some years as many as 199 nominations have been received. The nominations are kept secret by the committee which asks that nominators do the same. Over time many individuals have become known as "Nobel Peace Prize Nominees", but this designation has no official standing <2>. Nominations from 1901 to 1951 have been released in a database. When the past nominations were released it was discovered that Adolf Hitler was once nominated in 1939, though the nomination was retracted in February of the same year. Other infamous nominees included Joseph Stalin and Benito Mussolini.

Unlike the other Nobel Prizes, the Nobel Peace Prize may be awarded to persons or organizations that are in the process of resolving an issue, rather than upon the resolution of the issue. In this way, the Nobel Peace Prize differs from all the other Nobel prizes. Since the prize can be given to individuals involved in ongoing peace processes, some of the awards now appear, with hindsight, questionable, particularly when those processes failed to bear lasting fruit. For example, the awards given to Theodore Roosevelt, Yasser Arafat, Lê Ðức Thọ, and Henry Kissinger were particularly controversial and criticized; the latter prompted two dissenting committee members to resign <3>. The Nobel Committee has also received criticism from right-wing groups who see their decisions as guided by an apparent left-wing bias.

24. Consider the source on the "nomination"
Per Ahlmark, has noted that Blix is considered, “a little too accommodating to dictators,” and describes him as, “politically weak and easily fooled.”

Death Lobby: How the West Armed Iraq

Quite a scathing indictment of the US and several European nations. Richard Perle comes off as the only hero in the whole affair.

30. I wonder if intentions are considered
I truly believe that Bolton did his part just so this administration could try to justify another war. It was not done with any purpose of peace in mind, it was done by Mr. Bolton to get another war started in an oil rich country and advance the PNAC doctrine. Nothing peaceful about his purpose or intentions. I don't know enough about Timmerman to have an opinion.
