Guantanamo inmate sues for libel
February 8, 2006 - 2:27PM

"Former Guantanamo Bay inmate Mamdouh Habib was defamed by a series of newspaper articles that branded him a suburban terrorist and questioned claims he had been tortured, a court was told today.

Mr Habib is suing Nationwide News, publisher of The Daily Telegraph and The Weekend Australian newspapers, in the NSW Supreme Court over four articles published in 2002 and 2005.

Mr Habib, who was in court today, claims the articles have damaged his reputation in the community. "

continued:

"another opinion piece by Daily Telegraph columnist Piers Akerman published on February 15, 2005, shortly after Mr Habib's release from Guantanamo Bay, criticised Mr Habib's claims he made in a TV interview that he was tortured while held prisoner by US authorities."

1. Good luck and God speed, Habib.
That is not a court battle I wish upon anyone.

2. Why would they criticize his claims of torture?
They think he WASN'T tortured at Gitmo?

Yeah, right.

3. If the Telegraph says it, it's a despicable lie.
So I hope he wins.
