Senator Hillary Clinton defends contribution to abortion opponent
Senator Hillary Clinton defends contribution to abortion opponent

NEW YORK Senator Hillary Clinton is defending her contribution to a Democratic Senate candidate who opposes abortion.
She's given ten-thousand dollars to Pennsylvania State Treasurer Bob Casey, who is challenging Republican Senator Rick Santorum.

Clinton says Casey is a "real champion" on issues like health care for needy Americans, and says he's needed as Democrats try to win back Congress from the Republicans.

Casey is running well ahead of Santorum in many polls. But he's facing fierce resistance from some women's organizations because of his anti-abortion stance.

Many expect Clinton, who supports abortion rights, to run for president in 2008.

1. Are ALL politicians addicted to meaningless feel-good platitudes?
Why doesn't she just say, "Gee, you'd rather stay with Santorum?"

9. there are other options...
Pennacchio and Sandals are running against Casey in the Primary and they are pro-choice, anti-war, and pro universal healthcare.

I hate to say this but I have talked to a lot of Democrats who have very mixed feelings here in PA about Casey.

While I will pull a straight ticket in November I don't know that a lot of others will if Casey is on the ballot.

This is how I see it...the anti-abortion, republicans are not going to switch sides...they will vote for santorum.

The anti-choice democrats who voted for santorum may still vote for him...he is a sure bet.

The pro war freaks on both sides will go with santorum.

However the pro-choice women on both sides who vote on this issue may not know who to go with...and the republican women aren't left with much of a choice..

the polls may say santorum is beat but I won't believe anything until the day after the election....

Casey is a weak campaigner and I abhor the though of him debating santorum...Casey will trip over himself in a debate.

13. A vote for Pennachio or Sandals is really a vote for Santorum...
I am 99.9% sure it will come down to Casey v. Santorum, a choice in which I will put absolutely everything aside to vote against Santorum. Sandals and Pennachio would be great candidates in a race for an open seat or in a more securely blue state but NOT against a well-established ultra-right Republican. We have to remember that Santorum has been elected twice in Pennsylvania (however, unfortunately). He has done something that a good number of Pennsylvanians like (not me). So a candidate who can keep the Democratic voters and maybe, just maybe, attract a few Republicans is infinitely better suited for this particular race.

As much as I hate my subject line, it is the truth. Just as a vote for Nader in 2004 was a vote for Bush, turning away from Casey because of a few things is not worth having to deal with Santorum for another six years.

So I chose Casey as my ABS (Anybody but Santorum) candidate that can actually win.

16. no it isn't
if pennacchio or sandals loses....then Casey will be the only one up against Santorum...(other than any third party candidates)...so it isn't the same as Nader plus Pennacchio has stated that if he loses in the primary he will endorse and support Casey.

24. True...but...
won't it split the party a bit when it comes to the Nov. election? Won't there be some wavering Republicans who say, "Sheesh, Casey couldn't even do that well against people in his own party primary, why should I vote for him? Better the devil I know." And won't there be some progressive liberal Democrats who say, "I wanted Pennachio or Sandals. They're pro-choice, pro-universal health care, etc. And since my other choice is Santorum, I'm not even going to bother voting." Personally, I find that quite likely. And I think that it would definitely hurt Casey, or more importantly help Santorum.

I'm a pro-choice, pro-universal health care, anti-war, progressive liberal who dreams of having senators like Ted Kennedy and Russ Feingold. But I've got Santorum and Specter, so I'm going with the candidate who can most likely defeat my sitting senator from day one. He wouldn't be my first choice in a perfect world, but this isn't a perfect world, so he's my choice.

19. No, it's not. Per Zogby

When people find out about candidate positions on key issues, Casey plummets from a twelve point lead to a dead heat, with a non-significant two point lead.

Santorum loses when matched with any of the democratic candidates. Both of the self identified progressive democratic candidates draw higher percentages than Casey, with Pennacchio having the largest percentage of votes against Santorum, at a not quite significant 4.4 points higher than Casey. Casey, at non-significant levels, actually gets MORE votes from Republicans once they find out more about him and Santorum.
Casey refused to respond, so we constructed his positions from media and speeches.

OpEdNews.com's conclusion on this race-- Santorum wants Casey as his opponent because he wins the demographic game. Casey loses massively in some categories, when voters find out about Casey, which Santorum will sure insure. For example, Casy's support among 18-24 year olds drops from 63% to 40%, with Protestants, it drops from 47.3% to 30%, with liberals, from 95.4% to 68%, with moderates, from 64% to 53%, but Casey actually gains support from conservates, going from 3.9% to 5%, a non-significant, but interesting finding.

6. I know what you mean
Same here, it's\such a basic pillar of human rights I'd have a lot of trouble pulling that lever. At least his opponent is against abortion, too, so there is no temptation to vote the other way.

We had a gubernatorial candidate I really didn't like in Texas last time. Rather than vote for him, I voted straight party Democrat, then went through and voted for the Democrat specifically in every other category. So I voted for the party, but not him. Afterwards, I met several other Dems who had done the same thing, so it wasn't an original solution. :-)

8. Could be that HRC
contributed to Casey because she wants this man to win. Irregardless if he is pro life, right to life or whatever they are called these days. What I chuckle at is some on the left would rather be hyper-critical of HRC because she gave to Casey, a long time friend of his father. You all recall the right wing blasting us Dems in 92 because the story from the right was, the dems did not let Casey, then I believe Govenor of Pa. a chance to speak at the convention because he was pro life. Of course it was a lie, but what is that old saying, repeat a lie enough and people will believe it is the truth......

What makes me upset is HRC voted against Alito and Arlen Specter who is supposed to be the so called champion of women's rights, even though a repug voted for Alito. Hell, where is the outrage on that...Not to be found, but some on the left would rather be critical of HRC.....

11. So pro-choice voters are expected to vote for death to poor
women to increase the Democrats in Congress? Because that is the end outcome of putting anti-choice politicians in office.

Given that this is, quite literally, a life or death issue, I would not pull a lever for an anti-choice candidate no matter what his/her Party affiliation.

I am originally from PA, still have family, etc., there, and am hearing the outrage from people who will not vote for an anti-choice candidate.

Once again, the Democrats expect everyone to vote "lesser of two evils." But for many of us who have vivid memories of pre-Roe shattered lives - and deaths - this is non-negotiable.

I will never vote for someone who supports death for poor women who need abortions.

23. The other thing your vote for Casey will do is to...
The other thing your vote for Casey will do is to convince the Democrats
that Abortion (as an issue) doesn't matter and there's no reason why
they should ever go out on the limb over our right to choose.

*EVENTUALLY*, one has to vote against politicians who don't represent
your interests, or eventually *NONE* of them represent them.

This is an opportunity for a Democratic pickup, and aside from abortion, Casey has solid Democratic credentials.

The first year we could vote (1980), we voted against a Democratic Senate candidate because his opponent was pro-choice. The result was Arlen Specter.

17. And Arlene Specter provides one of the few moderate
Republicans in an otherwise sea of rabid WWJD crowd.

Yes, he voted for Alito but as Republicans go, we might have had a more balanced Senate if we had more like him.

Santorum. Casey is going to beat Santorum comfortably, and Hillary wants to support him doing it.

It's that simple.

25. LEGISLATING your Religious Views
As long as Casey keeps his religious views to himself and doesn't' try to impose them on OTHERS by legislation, who cares?

I liked the statement from one of our Catholic REPUBLICAN State Legislators here in New York who sponsored the bill to make the Morning After Pill OTC. "I was elected by the people of New York to represent ALL of them. I was not elected CATHOLIC BISHOP of New York."

27. An anti-choice representative is one of my bright lines that I will not
cross. At least I don't have to vote in this election. However, it does look like the powers that be are pushing Hillary big time and that is a shame. Hillary's pro-war stance has completely turned me off from voting for her and pro-war is my other bright line.
