Oakland Settles Anti-War Protest Lawsuit

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- A dozen anti-war protesters who accused police of using excessive force to break up a raucous demonstration three years ago have settled with the city for nearly $400,000, lawyers said.

Protesters said police fired wood bullets and bean-bag rounds at them without provocation and failed to allow them to disperse during the 2003 rally at the Port of Oakland. They said they were protesting the war in Iraq and targeted the port because at least one company there was handling war supplies.

The City Council agreed this week to pay $393,000 to settle the remaining lawsuits. Lawyers for the protesters said the deal was reasonable.

The settlement brings to $1.3 million the amount Oakland has agreed to paid to settle lawsuits related to the protest.

4. They were following orders from Mayor Jerry Brown and the big
boys in City Hall. The goal was to protect the war, and profits of the shippers.

3. I was there.
I saw it happen. I was arrested but not fired upon. I did sit in jail for 18 hours.
I remember that one of the first things that happened was Mayor Jerry Brown made a statement supporting police conduct. Not questioning, not hesitating, just unconditional support for police conduct. It was all planned ahead of time (and Jerry was part of that). You get a whole new perspective on Dems if they are firing upon you.

I was the first one to speak at the city council the next day. I told them it reminded me of occupied Nablus. I told them it was like Chicago, Tienanmen Square, and all the rest. It was a sad day for Oakland.

Fortunately, Mayor Brown is being termed out, and is likely to be replaced with former congressman Ron Dellums. Yay, Ron.

The sad part is that Jerry wants to be California Attorney General. god help this state.
If its brown, flush it down.

5. billypilgrim has pictures
It was very brutal. I was born in Oakland and have lived in the area on and off most of my life, but was abroad when the protest occurred. The pix are quite violent. Jerry Brown is such a creep. If he runs for AG it is very likely he will win. Who is opposing him? I'll send money.
