DeLay mails 8-page letter to rally his GOP troops
Note cites bogus ethics complaints and spurious suits

By KRISTEN MACK

Tom DeLay is adding a personal note to his re-election campaign.

The Sugar Land Republican congressman has sent an eight-page letter to constituents, written in script and asking for their support as he contends with questions about his ties to an indicted lobbyist, an indictment of his own and political challenges from inside and outside his party.

DeLay sent the letter to thousands of Republicans in the 22nd Congressional District, saying he wanted to answer questions directly and personally.

In the letter DeLay distances himself from disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff, whom he called "one of my closest and dearest friends," during a trip to the Northern Mariana Islands in 1997.

"The notion that Abramoff was a close friend who wielded influence over me is absolutely untrue," DeLay writes. "Jack Abramoff and I were not close personal friends. I met with him only occasionally, in fact less frequently than numerous others who brought issues before Congress — never did he receive preferential treatment. To be certain, I knew nothing about the crimes for which he has pled guilty."

1. Can his supporters read something 8 pages long?

Pretty dumb. The election will be over and they'll still be reading it.

What a waste of trees.

8. How appropriate: Tom DeLay writing an "8-Pager."
When I was a kid an "8-pager" was something entirely different. A guy would bring one to school & we'd all gather in the restroom to read it. A sixth-grade adrenaline rush - woo hoo!

3. DeLay Denies Ties To Abramoff; Lampson Labels Letter A Lie
DeLay Denies Ties To Abramoff; Lampson Labels Letter A Lie
by Bob Dunn, Feb 9, 09:50 pm

U.S. Rep. Tom DeLay sent a letter to thousands of constituents this week denying he’s been involved in any wrong-doing with Jack Abramoff, and denying a close friendship with the scandal-tainted former lobbyist.

According to a Thursday report in Roll Call, DeLay’s campaign mailed out a nine-page letter in the Sugar Land congressman’s home district, which includes much of Fort Bend County, in an effort to blunt allegations about his relationship with Abramoff and campaign contribution-related charges brought against him in Travis County.

The campaign manager for former Democratic congressman Nick Lampson, who’s running against DeLay, said the letter amounts to a lie.

Mike Malaise said DeLay “lied to his constituents about his relationship with Jack Abramoff. I don’t like using that word and I wish there was a better way to say it, but there isn’t. He lied, plain and simple.”

5. I guess he has forgotten all about his involvement
in the House putting a stop to the Northern Marianas Island minimum wage/slave labor law. That was a bi-partisan bill.

Casino Jack was against it and BugBoy made sure it didn't go anywhere.

I hope the Sugarland voters are tired of their sugar addition to Bugboy's rat poison disguised as candy!

13. Very well put! I think "Hot Tub Tom" should rent the Astro Dome
to plead his case. I'd love to hear his reasoning over the the Northern Marianas Island minimum wage/slave labor law issue.

Perhaps the Houston paper will produce the eight page letter?

16. I like how the Chronicle takes it upon itself
In the subhead, the Chronicle takes it upon itself to label the ethics complaints against DeLay as "bogus" and the lawsuits against DeLay as "spurious." Only without the quotation marks, which makes it look as if the paper itself is applying those adjectives to the complaints and suits, instead of DeLay.

Darn that librul media!

Clueless hacks.

29. The Chronicle editors took it upon themselves
to defend BugBoy early on. I believe it was last month before he stepped down from his "leadership role" that they were defending him and calling for a stop to his indictment, so he could go back to "leading us."

I'll try to find the article, however I don't think I saved it.

17. 8 pages?!?!?!?!

His press secretary pictured above in the middle, needs to go back to school. What idiot would send out an 8 page essay? And she needs to stick to simple minded one liners, like "Bring em On" "Smoke em Out" etc.

you can even get her quote on a postcard for Gosh sakes.

“Nick’s been hanging out with his Hollywood liberal donors for too long and needs a Texas-sized reality check,” said DeLay campaign spokeswoman Shannon Flaherty. “He’s lobbing these very nasty, personal attacks at Congressman DeLay for being candid, open, and honest with the voters, while Nick’s running around the country with Nancy Pelosi, MoveOn.org, and labor unions, and hiding it from Texas voters.”

blah blah blah

"Well, we weren't even pals, more like acquaintances."

"Would you believe I spoke to him once when he stopped me once and asked me the time?"

27. A little "Letter from Leavenworth Jail," eh, Mr. DeLay???
Although you're not there yet, but are you trying to liken yourself with a truly great man, Mr. DeLay?

In his letter, MLK was addressing crimes by man against man. You, on the other hand, are using this approach to whine about getting caught while committing crimes against man by you yourself. Won't fly, Mr. DelLay.

By the way, Mr. DeLay, this is off topic but did you know the USA has been subjected to terrorism for several decades? It just didn't happen on 9/11/01:

"Letter from a Birmingham Jail"

The power of Martin Luther King Jr.'s civil rights call-to-arms comes from watching a great man grapple with the possibility that he's wrong.

By Joan Walsh

Aug. 19, 2003 | In 1963 Martin Luther King Jr. called Birmingham, Ala., "by far the worst city for race relations in America." Also known as "Bombingham," the city had become infamous for at least 50 bombings of black homes and churches in the years since World War II, along with Sheriff Bull Connor's fire hoses and snarling police dogs during Freedom Summer in 1961. And all of that was before the awful slaughter at the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church on Sept. 15, 1963, when white supremacists blew up the spiritual home of the local civil rights movement during crowded Sunday services, killing the "Four Little Girls" memorialized by Spike Lee's devastating film of the same name and wounding 23 people.

So it's hard to imagine that when King wrote his famed "Letter From a Birmingham Jail," he was facing national criticism for bringing the wrath of the civil rights movement down upon a hapless city that, despite its ugly past, was supposedly doing its best to change. But that's exactly what provoked King's great work.

http://www.salon.com/opinion/freedom/2003/08/19/king/index_np.html

Perhaps you should wait until you really get to Leavenworth, Mr. DeLay, then see what kind of letter you can write.

to the appropriations committee clearly demonstrates the degree to which the rot permeates our government. Why do so many so boldly and arrogantly criticize the governments of other nations when ours allows for such blatantly institutionalized corruption? Amazing.
