Talent’s stem cell switch is under fire
Talent’s stem cell switch is under fire

ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
02/11/2006

The night before he announced to the nation that he was shifting his stance on stem cell research, U.S. Sen. Jim Talent conferred with his wife.

As he tells it, Brenda Talent, who is known for her frankness, had a prediction: "Jim, two things are going to happen: Nobody's going to like it, and they're all going to say you're doing it just for political reasons."

Replied the senator, "Well, if nobody likes it, why in the world would I be doing it for political reasons?"

But that's the flak Talent is fielding from all sides, in the wake of his announcement Friday that he was dropping his support for an anti-cloning bill popular with abortion opponents, and sponsoring an alternative proposal that he billed as a compromise.

As his wife predicted, nobody seems to like it. And everybody suspects politics is behind it.

5. slimy weasel fuck has a nice ring, though.
Kind of like Frank Zappa's "Nasty Poodle Chew" . . .

I just wish I didn't have to look at his squirrely mug.

Bad enuf that he's my fucking senator.

6. You are probably right...
...he's trying to frame his flip-flop as a "strong moral conviction". Trying to say, "See, I'm doing what I feel is right." And thus, according to his calculations, the fundies won't desert him, because where else are they going to go, and the moderates can feel less like he just another Bush yes-man.

Stem cell battle emerging as key issue in Missouri Senate race
SAM HANANEL
Associated Press
WASHINGTON - As debate in Missouri intensifies over a proposed ballot initiative on stem cell research, so does the pressure on Sen. Jim Talent to step into the fray.

So far, the Missouri Republican has largely remained on the sidelines, declining to take a direct position on a constitutional amendment that would safeguard stem cell research and treatments in the state.

The petition drive is emerging as a key political issue in this year's U.S. Senate race, and some are predicting the divisions it's causing in the Republican Party could hurt Talent's re-election chances in November.

"If Talent comes out in favor of stem cell research, he loses support from the evangelicals," said Max Skidmore, professor of political science at University of Missouri-Kansas City. "If he opposes it, he'll lose support from the business community that otherwise might support him."

You'd hope the fact he hid from defining his position so long will itself be something useful to Claire McCaskill. It shows what a sneaky, slimey Republican he really is.

9. For Talent to flip-flop,
it's going to cost him his base, and watch No-Talent go from Senator to ex-Senator to a big fat bum thrown out to the streets.

10. Yeah, I think he made a mistake here.
It was the fundies who were goo-goo for him in the first place. Business...well, I don't think they're generally as concerned with social issues as economic ones. When push came to shove, they would probably vote for him, or stay home. I don't think McCaskill would get too many of their votes. However, now he's lost his base without gaining anything substantial.
