FBI Claims Puerto Rico Threat
FBI Claims Puerto Rico Threat
February 11, 2006

Associated Press SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico -- FBI agents in Puerto Rico on Friday searched five homes and a business to thwart what the agency said was a "domestic terrorist attack" planned by militants favoring independence for the U.S. island territory.

The alleged attack would have involved explosives directed at "privately owned interests" and the public in Puerto Rico, according to Luis Fraticelli, special agent in charge of the FBI on the island.

Fraticelli, in a statement, did not disclose details about the alleged attack or the investigation, which the FBI said was focused on the pro-independence People's Boricua Army.

Agents searched the homes and business in and around the island's capital, San Juan, and in the smaller towns of Mayaguez, Aguadilla, Isabela and San German.

FBI spokesman Harry Rodriguez said there were no arrests, but declined to provide details of the operation.

4. The Puerto Rican people don't want full independence
Although I agree that they should have more say over the Navy's presence. Most Puerto Ricans want to stay a Commonwealth, and there are actually MORE Puerto Ricans who want statehood than independence (at least according to the last refferendum on this issue.)

5. That's correct
If Puerto Rico became a U.S. state, residents would be subject to the federal income tax -- a big reason why Puerto Ricans (presently) would prefer to remain Commonwealth subjects.

6. the navy pulled out of PR already
the Independence Party only receives about 4% of the vote. Statehood consistently polls around 45%. I would say your assessment was an understatement.

Ojeda Rios, the 72-year-old founder of the Macheteros, was a fugitive when he was fatally wounded in a shootout with FBI agents in the Hormigueros area of western Puerto Rico in September. His group was blamed for a wave of bombings and killings targeting civilians and military sites in the 1970s and 1980s.
(snip)

An altercation between agents and members of the local media broke out during one of the search operations after a reporter started interviewing one of the residents affected.

Reporters complained of having had pepper gas thrown at them but the FBI said that it simply used nonlethal force to prevent reporters and passersby from straying into a potential crime scene.

The FBI said agents were hit by unknown objects as they departed and that some of their vehicles were damaged.

Puerto Rican officials have urged the U.S. Justice Department to investigate the circumstances surrounding Ojeda Rios' death and whether he may have survived if he had been given speedy medical attention.

He was shot through the neck and shoulder with a single bullet, the FBI said, and died on the 137th anniversary of a revolt against Spanish military rule in Puerto Rico.
