Cheney Accidentally Shoots Fellow Hunter
WASHINGTON

Vice President Dick Cheney accidentally shot and injured a man during a weekend quail hunting trip in Texas, his spokeswoman said Sunday.

Harry Whittington, 78, was "alert and doing fine" after Cheney sprayed Whittington with shotgun pellets on Saturday at the Armstrong Ranch in south Texas, said property owner Katharine Armstrong.

Armstrong said Cheney turned to shoot a bird and accidentally hit Whittington. She said Whittington was taken to Corpus Christi Memorial Hospital by ambulance.

Cheney's spokeswoman, Lea Anne McBride, said the vice president was with Whittington, a lawyer from Austin, Texas, and his wife at the hospital on Sunday afternoon.

According to KGO news, the whole hunting party was wearing those bright orange vests. How the hell could Darth mistake that for a quail?

I suspect Darth is a bit distracted with the recent news from the Grand Jury. Nervous finger on that trigger--or just practicing before taking down Libby? SG

326. Reminds me of this Tom Lehrer song:

http://members.aol.com/quentncree/lehrer/hunting.htm

... or just read the words below:
Almost every day during the hunting season you see at least one item in the newspapers about somebody who has shot somebody else, under the impression that he was a deer with a red hat, perhaps. Maybe a large flesh-colored squirrel. At any rate, it seems to me that this marks an encouraging new trend in the field of blood sports, and deserves a new type of hunting song which I present herewith.

I always will remember,
'Twas a year ago November,
I went out to hunt some deer
On a morning bright and clear.
I went and shot the maximum the game laws would allow:
Two game wardens, seven hunters, and a cow.

I was in no mood to trifle,
I took down my trusty rifle
And went out to stalk my prey.
What a haul I made that day!
I tied them to my fender, and I drove them home somehow:
Two game wardens, seven hunters, and a cow.

The law was very firm, it
Took away my permit,
The worst punishment I ever endured.
It turned out there was a reason,
Cows were out of season,
And one of the hunters wasn't insured.

People ask me how I do it,
And I say "There's nothin' to it,
You just stand there lookin' cute,
And when something moves, you shoot!"
And there's ten stuffed heads in my trophy room right now:
Two game wardens, seven hunters, and a pure-bred Guernsey cow.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Notes
*In the orchestral version of this song, the last two stanzas are repeated.

From "That Was The Year That Was", no? (on edit: the answer is: no... there was a 7" EP that we had of his that had a red and white border and a drawing of him in tales, with a pitchfork, horns and a pointed tail sitting at a keyboard that wound around and spelling the name of the album- which i do not remember.... anyone help?)

one of my favorite albums from my childhood!

Thanks for re-printing the lyric here, mom!

550. What worries me is the propensity some hunters have to mix
drinking and hunting.

I see nothing wrong with hunting by day, then, when that's done, sitting in the cabin or tent or whatever and drinking, if they wish. The problem I see is, some fools do the two things simultaneously.

But, you know, I would expect those who have the money to get the best accomodations to have that all worked out. And that's another thing: in public hunting areas, it strikes me that there's much more chance for an accident, since you don't personally know everyone who's out there at any given moment, and how would you know if they are all following safety rules? But on PRIVATE land, I would think you could, if you wished, know everyone who was out there while you were out there, and know whether or not they were following safety rules.

I mean, Cheney and this guy Whittington had enough money to hire whatever place they wanted, and have it exclusively to themselves. Yet even then, they couldn't be safe because... well, because CHENEY was (we don't know the details yet) not following safety rules.

Finally, you as a hunter must recognize that many or most of the hunts Cheney goes on are "canned" hunts--shooting of farm-raised birds, etc. Sheesh. Such animals are not able to protect themselves. THAT IS NOT SPORT.

583. Agree with all points
anyone who drinks and hunts don't hunt with us- save the drinking for when we get back and the guns are unloaded and cleaned. And "canned" hunting ain't hunting at all, it's like shooting fish in a barrel.

589. I Think We Should Really Go After The Rethugs On Canned Hunting
The more people know about what passes for "hunting" among these people, the less they will want to vote for them.

People who don't like guns and hunting will work harder to defeat them.

Hunters will be less inclined to vote for them, because what they do is a pathetic travesty of hunting.

There is no significant group of voters we could possibly alienate by making a stink about this.
(We don't have the "shoot them so we can watch them die" vote anyway, and we don't really want or need it).

Howard Dean, with his high NRA ratings, would be well-positioned to lead the charge.

Not to shut the places down (not yet, anyway), but to chide the Repubs for their taste in fake hunting.

We can make it very costly for the pols to be seen frequenting such places.

608. Good idea. "Country club hunting."
That oughta alienate plenty of people! Or how about "grey poupon hunting".

I just read a blog article in which they referred to it as "hunting from your car".

Once again, I'm drawn back to Cheney's most glaring trait: he has so much money, he's at least a billionaire, if not a trillionaire. (Lately, of course, the majority of his money has been "earned" by stealing it from the U.S. Treasury.)

And with all those riches, the best he can get is this pathetic, phony, Disneyland, fake version of "hunting"?? What a dud the man is. He can't even be authentic about his hobby, which he supposedly loves.

556. Right. "Who's Next?" from "That Was the Year That Was"

First we got the bomb and that was good,
'Cause we love peace and motherhood.
Then Russia got the bomb, but that's O.K.,
'Cause the balance of power's maintained that way!
Who's next?

France got the bomb, but don't you grieve,
'Cause they're on our side (I believe).
China got the bomb, but have no fears;
They can't wipe us out for at least five years!*
Who's next?

Then Indonesia claimed that they
Were gonna get one any day.
South Africa wants two, that's right:
One for the black and one for the white!**
Who's next?

Egypt's gonna get one, too,
Just to use on you know who.
So Israel's getting tense,
Wants one in self defense.
"The Lord's our shepherd," says the psalm,
But just in case, we better get a bomb!
Who's next?

Luxembourg is next to go
And, who knows, maybe Monaco.
We'll try to stay serene and calm
When Alabama gets the bomb!
Who's next, who's next, who's next?
Who's next?

Many times before, he has (quite believably) state he does not read the press and does not look at opinion polls. He really does NOT care, he will simply do what he wants.
Caring what other people think or say is a sign of humanity, of having a sense of balance, humility and concern for the possibility that you made a mistake. Dick CHeney has none of those qualities.

Anyone else? yeah, I'd agree they were getting distracted. But not Dead-Eye.

it's the fucking retards that use them. If Cheney would have served his country instead of dodging the draft he may have been more safety conscious about firearms.
Too bad Cheney didn't have the BIG ONE after this. Any normal person would gave been shaken up enough to have some effect on them, but Cheney probably just sneered at him and continued "hunting". :eyes:

Hell, the way things work nowadays, he could probably sue for the Vice Presidency itself and win.

I would not describe that experience as AWAKE and ALERT.

I wonder if Darth Cheney and Darth Lynn are playing cards with him or looking at TV or just shooting (oops) the breeze!

Give me a break, anyone in ICU at the age of 78 should not be described in those terms after taking a blast to the body from a person without a heart.

Please FAUX News, give us a break.

I pray for the well being of the victim.

110. An experienced hunter - LMAO !!
Cheney has the motherfuckers release the animals in front of him and then he shoots them.

I know people in Patterson, LA (where Cheney and Scalia went hunting) who have witnessed this type of "hunting."

For Cheney - it's all about his image. He wants to look like a manly man instead of a fucking coward who had six deferments from Vietnam. He wouldn't touch a gun if he didn't have to. But I'm sure he loves the killing part.

I don't care how well trained or experienced you are, you can still make mistakes with firearms that can result in serious injury or death - guns arent toys even though people like Cheney use them like that (ie for enjoyment rather than as a a tool).

I'm not saying they should be banned, but people have to stop looking to firearms for thrills. In my opinion firearms should only be used as a tool to accomplish a specific task - and as far as I am concerned hunting for pleasure doesn't fall into that category. Sure if you need to eat and hunting is how you do it then fine, but killing quail just for the pleasure of having blown the hell out of a small bird is not something I believe people should do.

But I am talking about a cultural change rather than a legal change - I don't mean to ban these activities, but the sooner they become socially unacceptable and thus undesirable the better. As far as I am concerned people should treat thrill hunters the way they treat smokers.

596. Actually, I'm a smoker...
But your reaction is what I was trying to convey. I don't mean to suggest the treatment of smokers is right or anything, just that the way smokers are treated is the way thrill hunters, who kill animals for nothing more than the enjoyment of killing something, should be treated.

In my opinion though, smokers shouldn't, at least not for just being smokers - smoking in places where non-smokers are is another story.

A really experienced hunter always knows where his fellow hunters are, and NEVER aims a gun in that direction. Cheney is just some rich dude that goes out with other rich dudes, trying to feel like men, and never quite making it. In 10+ years of hunting, I have NEVER "peppered" anyone, nor come anywhere close.

83. By tomorrow this is how it will read:
Vice president Cheney saved the life of a fellow hunter Saturday in Texas. As the Vice President was taking a well deserved stroll after hours of intense discussions with foreign diplomats, Cheney noticed a deadly moccasin rattle snake approaching one the dignitaries, fangs bared, ready to strike. Cheney drew his gun and shot the reptile before he could kill the man, who happened to be a highly decorated war hero. Cheney's quick response saved the man's life, said his wife (and mother of his five children). The man was slightly injured by fragments of stone that struck his torso during the incident. The vice president will receive a medal of honor for his heroism and bravery.

566. No, but listen carefully
Every outlet inclined to charity, and there are more than a few factually accents the story thusly accidentally "sprayed" him with "birdshot" and then names several parts of the body. Then it is all sweetness and light for the patient recovering nicely with NO mention of the ICU the poor sap is still in.
Others were brought in for damage control(not for the wounded guy) to try to make light of the event. Not a glimmer of an idea about involving the law or losing his license, which in this case seems to be the same as 007's.

That's the lead and the tone. Then for the edification of the detail enthusiasts the details, without question or comment come out as the WH releases them. Without question or comment unless, once again, one wishes to make light of the "accident" and make a thousand excuses for Cheney.

Royalty should have it so good. I bet the British press would have a field day savaging any royal who blasted a citizen by mistake. And in our country most officials other than Boss Hogg types would be expected to answer to the law or at least submit to investigation.

THE MOST DANGEROUS GAME: A lawyer.

Basic hunter safety:

Know your firearm

Identify your target

Don't drink

The bastard has been shooting from the hip for years...........what should we expect differently. Just be thankful he didn't kill Mr. Whittington.

538. They Were In Long Grass....
Or so the story I read told me. Now grass rustles, but a man would make a much bigger rustle than a quail. When birds fly up, startled you can usually hear their wings, too. So Dead Eye Dick (Oh, please, I do love it so)
spun around quickly, and without checking first just blasted away. Good going. He is the poster child for gun safety. Unless he thought he was hunting Sasquatch, maybe he should have checked?

I also read about three different statements about Cheney having medical personnel who travel with him constantly. If that's so, he is standing on death's door with someone ready to pull the mat out from under him. He may have a clean bill of health, but I'll bet it's not good health.

This is really a bizarre incident, though. If it was anyone else he would probably face judicial inquiry at the very least.

I'm not a hunter. I hate it, but I do feed birds and I have about six doves who come in every day. If I surprise them while they are eating, there's a lot of flapping and they zoom right up. It's a very distinctive sound.

603. Now more conflicting details...
Now more conflicting details come out. The story keeps changing. In one version the rancher's wife says they were in trucks or SUVs, stopping and getting out to shoot. Seems they were shooting at coveys of birds who were not wild, but raised as domestic animals to be hunted. Not like they would have a sporting chance or anything.

I heard one rumor of a lot of drinking going on and that being the reason for the delay in reporting what happened.

It appears the victim was more seriously injured than they wanted anyone to know. Yesterday they made it sound like his face had been sprayed lightly by buckshot. Today it's his face, neck and chest and they have to leave the buckshot in because it is too dangerous to remove it right now. He must be in fairly bad condition for the doctor to make that decision. Leaving a foreign body embedded in the skin can lead to a whopping septic infection, especially in someone 78 years old. It's a terrible muddle of lies and misinformation. But the one true thing that comes out of it is exactly what you said. Cheney is a dumb ass and probably a lot worse than that.

I'm not a hunter, but isn't being quiet and silent the idea while you're hunting? Was the guy supposed to announce to Cheney in a loud voice, "Yoo hoo, Dick, I'm right here!! You spotted anything worth shooting at yet?" That would scare away all of Dick's targets.
By the way, if the guy was behind Cheney, how was he supposed to signal him?

Edited on Sun Feb-12-06 10:35 PM by Democracy deth watch
This Whittington guy might be an old-fashioned Republican, the kind that occasionally has a lucid thought or a moral conviction that he acts on even though it's not in line with George Bush's morally bankrupt political platform.

Whittington even opposes opposes the death penalty in some circumstances.

Unless this is the old guy's son or something?

snip

To Harry Whittington, an Austin lawyer and former state prison board member aiding in (Walter) Bell's latest round of appeals, the case exemplifies what he sees as two disturbing hallmarks of death penalty justice in Texas.

First is the blind persistence of prosecutors in pursuing death sentences even when the law has turned against them, Whittington said.

Second, he said, is the failure of prosecutors and courts to understand mental retardation and devise legal and compassionate methods for dealing with criminals afflicted by it.

"Canned" "hunting" seems to be quite popular amongst the Rethugs.

We should be using their taste in "hunting" against them.

It is not only animal rights activists who would find such a practice detestable.

Real hunters would be repulsed as well, if they knew.

Perhaps it is time that somebody tells them.

They got all over Kerry over not being a "real" hunter, but how much more fake can you get?

545. These "hunting ranches" are all over the United States.....
most are in the south though. There are many in Florida. They'll even procure "big game", lions, rhinos, etc. from overseas or from illegal exotic pet importers and actually tie them up to trees so they can't flee. Then the "great white Republican hunter" is taken on a mock "safari" to kill the animal where it's tethered. :eyes: The big, brave hunters! :puke: Of course the pay thousands of dollars for this "privilege", afterward they return to the "hunting lodge" where drinks and cigars are consumed in copious amounts and the "hunters" swap stories of their conquests. It is totally disgusting.
I've read several books about these "hunts". Private game reserves: legalized slaughter of animals for "sport". :eyes:
Think about it, the Republicans want nothing that's fair, nothing with a modicum of chance in it. They steal elections, shoot tethered animals........these are sick individuals. :puke:

57. Harry Whittington, Texas Funeral Service Commission
Harry Whittington ( Austin), Presiding Officer/Term Expires 2/1/07

http://www.tfsc.state.tx.us/employeeListing.html

Final Disposition
The Texas Funeral Service Commission is up to its ashes in trouble again

No state agency has had a more troubled history than the Texas Funeral Service Commission, whose mission is to regulate the industry by means of "impartial enforcement, inspection, and education to insure that the final disposition of every citizen is conducted at the highest level of professional standards and ethical conduct." For various reasons, the TFSC has had persistent and ongoing problems pursuing that mission. And the tiny agency is – once again – in the middle of controversy.

Four years ago, the commission was shaken by a major scandal involving allegedly illegal embalmings being performed by the world's biggest funeral company, Houston-based Service Corporation International. After a lengthy investigation, a TFSC committee recommended that SCI be fined $445,000 for the violations. At about the same time that the agency began pushing for payment of the fine, the funeral giant was able to get extraordinary access to, and helpful intervention from, the staff of then Gov. George W. Bush.

Bush staffers, including Joe Allbaugh, held special meetings with SCI's CEO, Robert Waltrip. The executive director of the TFSC during the SCI investigation, Eliza May, was soon alleging that she was pressured by Allbaugh and other Bush staffers to halt the ongoing investigation into the company's misdeeds. She later sued the state for wrongful termination. In 2001, her lawsuit was settled when the state and SCI agreed to pay her an amount in excess of $200,000.

http://www.austinchronicle.com/issues/dispatch/2004-05-14/pols_feature.html

Regulating the Regulators

For instance, two recently fired employees say they are going to sue the TFSC for wrongful termination. One of those employees and several funeral directors allege that the TFSC has been purposely targeting minority-owned funeral homes for enforcement actions. Of the half dozen or so funeral directors interviewed for this story, none wanted to have his or her name used, for fear of retaliation. One said, "I'm scared to go up against them because I know they won't be truthful in dealing with me." One Dallas-area undertaker told me that very few members of the Texas Funeral Directors Association can deal with Robbins and that his bluster and intransigence have completely soured the relationship between the group and the TFSC. (The association refused to comment for this story.) Meanwhile, a member of the Texas House, Rep. Miguel Wise, D-Weslaco, has vowed to make sure that the agency is euthanized and its duties turned over to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.
Wise hasn't stopped there. He has asked both the Travis Co. District Attorney's Office and the Texas Rangers to investigate alleged wrongdoing at the agency. Wise says he is "amazed at all that crap that's going on" at the TFSC and calls it an "agency that is out of control."

527. If there is a Texas statute, criminal charges could be filed
Just looking around on the internet this evening, it looks like negligence on the part of the shooter would have to be proved. This might be part of the reason for the story we're hearing, which is:

Whittington quietly slithered up behind Darth Cheney, without setting off flares and fog horns to warn other members of the hunting party of his approach. All responsible hunters observe this well known and time-honored safety precaution. It was therefore Whittington's own fault that he got shot. Cheney was not to blame, and was not negligent

I guess this is academic, though, because the Vice President can not be charged by Texas authorities. Impeachment would be the only legal course of action - I think. Of course, one would expect to see this vintage Karl Rove line of bullshit, whether there are legal ramifications or not. It is designed to make it look like Cheney was not a blithering idiot for having committed this reckless act. You can expect Whittington to back up this ridiculous story, because he is a lifelong crony of the Bush cartel.

I used to hunt upland (that means other than water fowl) game birds, including quail, quite a bit. And no, I've never had anyone release any kind of animal from a cage so that I could shoot it as it tried to escape. There can be no legitimate excuse for what Cheney did. As the shooter, gun safety was 100% his responsibility.

here: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=364&topic_id=395720&mesg_id=395720

partial quote from article and note the date:

Lawyer wins another round in eminent domain case against the city
City might argue the case in a lower court.

Little Guys who take on the government rarely win, unless the Little Guy is a guy like Harry Whittington.

Whittington, an Austin lawyer, is very rich, very stubborn and very patient — qualities that come in handy if, like him, you're waging a long legal battle against the city.

Seems to be some big Bush supporters (no surprise)

The GSW victim's name did not turn up via google and Whitehouseforsale.org has no record of his name.

It probably was just a negligent discharge, however I would like to know what if anything is the relationship between Cheny and Harry Whittington.

87. 50,000-acre Armstrong Ranch = GOP Killing Ground
http://www.whitehouseforsale.org/ContributorsAndPaybacks/pioneer_profile.cfm?pioneer_ID=509
Pioneer Tobin Armstrong’s ancestor, Texas Ranger John B. Armstrong, bought the beginnings of the Armstrong Ranch in 1882 with the $4,000 bounty he received for capturing outlaw John Wesley Hardin. In 1944 Tobin’s older brother wed an heir of legendary King Ranch (see Fausto Yturria), linking two of the biggest ranches in Texas. The Armstrong Ranch has since gone global, with tracts in Australia and South America. In recent years, Tobin and his wife, Anne, have hosted many GOP dignitaries--including the first and second President Bush--on their 50,000-acre Armstrong Ranch in South Texas. “We go out when the dew is still on the grass, and then hunt until we shoot our limit,” Tobin said in 2000 of his ranch outings with Dick Cheney. “Then we pick a fine spot and have a wild game picnic lunch.” True conservatives might choke on their javelina steaks if they knew that Tobin Armstrong dunned the government for $11,336 in farm subsidies between 1995 and 2002, according to the Environmental Working Group. Anne Armstrong served as: a close advisor to President Nixon; President Ford’s British Ambassador; and approved covert actions on the President’s Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board under Reagan. A veteran of blue-chip corporate boards, Anne Armstrong was a Halliburton director when that corporation hired Cheney. She is Kay Bailey Hutchison’s best friend, having helped launch the senator’s career as Republican National Committee co-chair in 1971. George W. Bush appointed Anne Armstrong as a Texas A&M regent in 1997. She and her husband were part of Laura Bush’s delegation to the funeral of Queen Mother Elizabeth in 2002. As a Kenedy County Commissioner in 2001, Tobin Armstrong expressed serious reservations about a short-lived Bush administration plan to relocate a Navy bomb-testing site from Puerto Rico to the fragile sand dunes of a local beach. Daughter Katharine Armstrong--formerly Katherine Idsal--and ex-son-in-law Warren Idsal also are Pioneers. President Bush invited Tobin, Anne and Katharine Armstrong to a White House sleepover.

Heck, I'm not even a hunter and I know that rule. We loose more people to "accidents" that way. It doesn't help that too many hunters refuse to wear even an orange hat and insist on camo or tan (a couple of years ago one hunter killed another one... he was wearing brown/tan... the same color as the deer up here... fool).

You'd think Cheney would know better... good grief and this man is a breath away from being president... scarey.

Maybe this will finally end my dad's Bush sympathies. Why? He was accidently shot by an incompetent fellow bird hunter a couple years ago, and has no respect for someone who doesn't follow the basics of hunting and ends of hurting people.

123. Here's HARRY...
http://www.statesman.com/metrostate/content/metro/stories/07/17harry.html

snip

His dignified presence belies a fierce competitive spirit and antipathy toward government power. Indeed, Whittington defeated the city once before — 45 years ago. He won a court ruling that invalidated a 1959 bond election allowing Austin to use federal money to condemn and redevelop blighted homes. The judge found that ineligible voters had cast ballots, something Whittington had suspected.

snip

That early fight crystallized Whittington's libertarian beliefs and put him squarely in the Republican column at a time when Democrats ruled Texas.

Whittington worked in several Republican campaigns starting with John Tower, who replaced Lyndon B. Johnson, becoming Texas' first Republican senator since Reconstruction.

snip

Gov. George W. Bush pressed him into service one more time in 1999. The state's Funeral Services Commission was essentially in receivership over allegations of widespread corruption in the industry. The commission was also reeling from a dispute with Houston-based Service Corp. International, the nation's largest funeral services operator, led by Robert Waltrip, a personal friend of Bush.

Harry M. Whittington

Born: Henderson, March 3, 1927

Education: University of Texas School of Law, 1950

Work: Solo practitioner, Austin

Public service: Texas Department of Corrections Board, 1979-85; Texas Public Finance Authority Board, 1987-1994; Texas Funeral Services Commission, 1999-present (term expires 2007); Texas Office of Patient Protection, 2004-present

Personal: Married to Mercedes Baker Whittington since 1950; four daughters, six grandchildren; member of Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, Austin

Whittington is a private practice attorney, practicing law in Austin since 1950. He is a member of the State Bar of Texas. Whittington has served as past chairman of the Texas Public Finance Authority Board and is a past member of the Texas Board of Corrections, now known as the Texas Board of Criminal Justice. He serves as a public member and chairman of the Texas Funeral Service Commission. He received his law degree from the University of Texas at Austin.

Harry Whittington of Austin, who was named presiding officer of the Funeral Service Commission after a major shakeup of agency in 1999, said his board reluctantly agreed to pay $50,000 as part of the settlement to end the 2-year-old case.

Ex-funeral agency chief settles suit

Closing the Funeral-gate: Three years ago, the Texas Funeral Service Commission was all but declared dead when the state comptroller's office took over the agency's day-to-day affairs. But next month, TFSC chair Harry Whittington will head to the governor's mansion to pick up an award from the Texas Incentive and Productivity Commission, which rewards agencies and employees for improving performance and saving the state money. "This should inspire our group, which had pretty much been beaten down over the years," says Whittington, whom former Gov. George W. Bush appointed board chair in 1999. (Bush was then a key figure in the "Funeralgate" controversy.) New oversight rules have gone into place since then, and the agency has grown; it now regulates cemeteries as well as the state's crematories. The latter is a fast-growing industry in Texas, Whittington says; of the 57 facilities in the state, three are in Austin. -- A.S.

I think it took 24 hours to report this because they had to get the language right so it wouldn't sound SO BAD!!!!!

This man was SHOT in the Head and neck region.
He doesn't look like a man who could easily take a hit from a flyswatter, much less to be "SPRAYED" (*shot*) with a shotgun.

Can't wait for John to get back. What a gift to him this will be.

Meanwhile, I hope that Whittington is WELL and IMPROVING, not just "medically stable", whatever RoveSpeak that is.
I'll bet he's pretty pissed off, too. :)

166. Scoop for Corpus Christi Paper: Cheney Shoots Local Hunter
Scoop for Corpus Christi Paper: Cheney Shoots Local Hunter
Vice President Cheney

Published: February 12, 2006 4:30 PM ET

WASHINGTON Vice President Dick Cheney accidentally shot and injured a man during a weekend quail hunting trip in Texas, his spokeswoman said Sunday.
(snip)

The news was reported nationally Sunday afternoon, with no explanation of why there was a delay. The shooting was first reported by the Corpus Christi Caller-Times.

The Corpus Christi paper said the accident happened at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.

Armstrong said Whittington was mostly injured on his right side, with the pellets hitting his cheek, neck and chest, and was taken to the hospital by ambulance.
(snip)

Armstrong said she was watching from a car while Cheney, Whittington and another hunter got out of the vehicle to shot at a covey of quail late afternoon on Saturday.

Whittington shot a bird and went to look for it in the tall grass, while Cheney and the third hunter walked to another spot and found a second covey.

Whittington "came up from behind the vice president and the other hunter and didn't signal them or indicate to them or announce himself," Armstrong told the Associated Press in an interview.

"The vice president didn't see him," she continued. "The covey flushed and the vice president picked out a bird and was following it and shot. And by god, Harry was in the line of fire and got peppered pretty good."
(snip)

"It broke the skin," she said. "It knocked him silly. But he was fine. He was talking. His eyes were open. It didn't get in his eyes or anything like that."

She said emergency personnel traveling with Cheney tended to Whittington, holding his face and cleaning up the blood.

"Fortunately, the vice president has got a lot of medical people around him and so they were right there and probably more cautious than we would have been," she said. "The vice president has got an ambulance on call, so the ambulance came."
(snip/...)

186. It's the guy who was in charge after chimp's "Funeralgate" scandal
Edited on Sun Feb-12-06 05:15 PM by rainbow4321
Yes, it really was called funeralgate at the time. Google the word and chimp's name for more info but here is one article.

http://www.bushwatch.com/gravedigger.htm

A former state funeral home regulator who said she was wrongfully fired for investigating a large funeral home chain operated by a longtime family friend of George W. Bush has settled her 2-year-old whistleblower lawsuit for $210,000.

The state will pay Eliza May and her lawyers $155,000 and Houston-based Service Corp. International will pay $55,000, said sources familiar with the agreement. Ms. May contended in her lawsuit that she was fired in 1999 as executive director of the Texas Funeral Service Commission after SCI Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Robert Waltrip met with Joe Allbaugh, a top aide to Mr. Bush while he was governor, to complain about the agency's investigation of the company's homes.

After the investigation, fines totaling about $450,000 were assessed against more than 20 of SCI's affiliated funeral homes for using unlicensed embalmers. SCI has appealed, and a state hearings officer is expected to rule soon on the case.

Harry Whittington of Austin, who was named presiding officer of the Funeral Service Commission after a major shakeup of agency in 1999, said his board reluctantly agreed to pay $50,000 as part of the settlement to end the 2-year-old case.

It just took me aback. I guess expected more concern for the poor man that got shot, or even some questions about why this story is just now reaching the public...

... there was a "VIP movement TFR" (Temporary Flight Restriction) around Armstrong Tx this weekend.

Apparently the FAA was worried that The Great White Hunter might get confused and start shooting at any airplanes he saw - in the belief that he was thwarting Terra Attacks on NAS Corpus.

Great.

205. I believe he's the first sitting Vice President to actually shoot someone
There's some weird insights into Cheney in the CNN story.

Like this one:

"Fortunately, the vice president has got a lot of medical people around him and so they were right there and probably more cautious than we would have been," she said. "The vice president has got an ambulance on call, so the ambulance came."

Does he travel in some sort of high-tech 'medical pod' or something?

And this one makes me wonder:

Armstrong said Cheney is a longtime friend who comes to the ranch to hunt about once a year. She said Whittington is a regular, too, but she thought it was the first time the two men hunted together.

"This is something that happens from time to time. You now, I've been peppered pretty well myself," said Armstrong.

Wonder how many times Armstrong's been shot by Cheney? Sounds like hunting with Cheney is like hunting with Mr. Magoo. (Look out! <BLAM> )

542. Burr did do in Hamilton in a duel..........
Burr and Hamilton met on the dueling grounds of Weehawken, New Jersey on July 11, 1804 Burr shot Hamilton, who fired into the air either as a reflex after being shot or purposely to avoid shooting Burr. Hamilton was rowed back across the river to New York City, where he lingered until the next day and died in great pain. Burr was indicted for murder in New York State, but never prosecuted. After completing his duties as Vice President in 1805, Burr entered into a conspiracy to wrest the lands west of the Mississippi River from Spain; these intrigues included the Louisiana Purchase.

I'm no hunter, but I'm no stranger to shotguns (skeet and trap, etc.), and this "peppered" B.S. doesn't seem logical to me, especially when it was mentioned that the guy was hit on his face, his neck, and his side.

He could not have been very far away--and unless he was one hell of a lot taller than Cheney, like a giant or something, Cheney wasn't firing into the air.

like Jimmy Carter.

My grandfather was an avid hunter, and the second maddest I ever saw him was when he told the story of going quail hunting with the preacher and another guy, and the preacher shot the other guy in the ass! It was from a fairly safe distance, but the buckshot stung pretty bad. (The maddest I ever saw him was when we came across a doe in the woods that had been shot and part of the carcass cut away.)

Only a complete fucking dumbass (or a wannabe murderer) shoots another hunter, especially if they're bird hunting! You're supposed to never aim your weapon below the horizon level when you're bird hunting.

It's ALWAYS the other guy's fault with these maniacs. And they seem to love shooting at things that can't shoot back (probably the reason he got so many Vietnam deferments).

"Fortunately, the vice president has got a lot of medical people around him and so they were right there and probably more cautious than we would have been," she said. "The vice president has got an ambulance on call, so the ambulance came."

Yeah, because he's a walking heart attack. Lucky for the guy he shot.

RAW

Whittington "came up from behind the vice president and the other hunter and didn't signal them or indicate to them or announce himself," Armstrong said.

"The vice president didn't see him," she continued. "The covey flushed and the vice president picked out a bird and was following it and shot. And by god, Harry was in the line of fire and got peppered pretty good."

I don't own a gun -- and I am opposed to hunting and guns-- I think both should be banned, but even I can figure out that, during -- hunting season -- one must be aware of their fellow hunters first, and if I was a hunter I would not expect them (other hunters) to warn me by sounds if they are hunting --so as to scare away the hunted.

319. James and Sarah Brady Comment on the Vice President's Hunting Mishap
To: National Desk

Contact: Peter Hamm of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, 202-289-5792

WASHINGTON, Feb. 12 /U.S. Newswire/ -- James and Sarah Brady made comments today related to Vice President Cheney's reportedly accidental shooting yesterday in Texas.

"Now I understand why Dick Cheney keeps asking me to go hunting with him," said Jim Brady. "I had a friend once who accidentally shot pellets into his dog - and I thought he was an idiot."

"I've thought Cheney was scary for a long time," Sarah Brady said. "Now I know I was right to be nervous."

After it was revealed that Whittington posed no immediate threat to Cheney or any other American, the administration blamed the errant attack on a failure of the intelligence community and asserted that it could have averted had the NSA domestic spying been permitted to continue without interference from freedom-hating Congressional Democrats and the "liberal" media.

343. I bet he dropped the shotgun...
OK, I'm not a hunter but from what I know, when you hunt quail you shoot them while they're in the air. Assuming the "victim" was behind him when he got dinged, that implies that Cheney swiveled around approximately 180 degrees before he pulled the trigger. If he was, if fact, aiming at a bird in flight, how on earth did he hit someone on the ground? Any hunters out there know the spread pattern on a shell? I suppose if the bird was low enough, the spread of the shot might have reached someone on the ground, but still...(!)

I bet any money he dropped the gun and it went off, hitting Whittington...and that's why it took them a day to get the news out - so that the spinmeisters could figure out how to portray it.

Also, I noticed the story said "Armstrong said she was watching from a car while Cheney, Whittington and another hunter got out of the vehicle to shoot at a covey of quail.". So, they drive around and somebody says, "hey, lookie there, shoot them dadgum birdies", and they all jump out with guns a blazin'? They call that "hunting"?

350. •Cheney Shoots Hunter, Repeals 2nd Amendment

(2006-02-12) — Vice President Dick Cheney today accidentally peppered a 78-year-old hunting buddy with shotgun pellets during a quail hunt in Texas, injuring attorney Harry Whittington.

Filled with remorse over the incident, the vice president immediately repealed the Second Amendment to the Constitution, which guarantees “the right to bear arms.”

“I’m truly sorry that I winged Harry when he blocked my shot at the quail,” said Mr. Cheney. “I now realize that gun violence is not just an inner-city poor problem, but rather an epidemic that can spill out of the ghetto and affect wealthy and powerful, elderly Americans.”

The vice president said he has “directed President Bush to declare martial law and to repeal the Second Amendment temporarily, until we can get a federal court to declare the right to bear arms unconstitutional.”

If the courts fail to rule in his favor, Mr. Cheney said he would at least pressure Congress to enact more stringent gun-sales background checks.

In coming days, via a special commission appointed by the pResident, we will learn that it was not Cheney's firearm that discharged the offending projectiles. We will learn, through top secret ballistics tests, that the shots were in fact discharged from the shotgun of a "terrist" hidden in the bushes.

Freedom is on the march, keep Amurka safe, fight the terrists there so we don't have to fight them here, blah, blah, blah...

Hope he sues. :-)

I like how the guy in the article makes it Whittington's fault. Sure, he should have made everyone aware of where he was, but last time I checked the guy with the gun is the responsible party. You don't go hunting with the safety training you wish you had...etc.

If it had been Cheney on the receving end, I wonder if it would have been "...something that happens from time to time" and not such a big deal.

But then unless the pellets were made of silver, he wouldn't have even been scratched.

I'm sure the guy who got shot just got scratched, and didn't even need hospitalization - just like Murtha and Kerry. :sarcasm:

378. Expert Opinion
coming from someone who has shot thousands of wild non farm raised doves over my life here is my take..

Dick lost situational awareness of where everyone was. mistake one.
Dick fired on a low bird, big mistake 2. Never fire level at birds.
Dick fired into a obstructed backstop, high grass, mistake 3.

Very stupid things to do even if no one is shot. Shooting level will get you uninvited to most hunts on the spot.

Other factors that be at play.

Weather. Heat can cause breaks in concentration, especially 90+ degree heat.
Alcohol. Any drinking in this situation would be a very bad thing

Thankfully no one was killed.

A shotgun with high brass 5 or 5 shot at close range will blow you head off, literally. At 50 it still has enough energy to penetrate skin. causing serious injury and blindness.

You say that about someone leaving their shoe untied.

Shooting (peppering, in today's language) someone seems to go beyond carelessness to me.

But yes, he failed on any responsible count.

394. half dozen of one..
That is the word my father used. Stupid and negligent go to. Not understating the act of shooting someone.

I know for sure if this had happened in the service it is an automatic article 15 and probable discharge. The logic being if your weapon ADed ,which it could do if the firing pin dimpled the primer hard enough when the bolt was released, the only way you would hit someone is if it was pointed in an unsafe direction.

I can tell you I have never been shot with direct pellets, had it land on me(normal), nor seen anyone fire a shotgun level without a serious talking to.

From WAPO:

"Fortunately, the vice president has got a lot of medical people around him and so they were right there and probably more cautious than we would have been," she said. "The vice president has got an ambulance on call, so the ambulance came."

So are US taxpayers paying for medical services????

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=364x395842
thread title (2-0-06 GD): There's something wrong w/ Cheney -- killed 70 TAME birds in one trip
Comment/excerpt: The poster notes “In one incident that received some press coverage, Cheney and his pals had 500 farm raised pheasants -- that is, birds that had lost their fear of people -- released before them. The party killed 417 birds in one day, with Cheney bagging 70 of the tamed animals himself. This is not hunting. This is slaughter. This represents the same mental illness that caused W to kill small animals as a child. Isn't wanton killing of small animals by children a sign of mental illness and a marker for violent criminal behavior in the adult?”

It was like a video game addict so lost in the hypnotic sequence of shooting virtual bad guys he lost track of the real world - but this is the Vice President and he was shooting living beings, including a human.

Bizarre and sick. As if we we needed more evidence of that.

438. Got out of the vehicle??
Wait a minute now! I thought Quail hunters are supposed to walk (or ride horses) behind their dogs. This is the first time I ever heard of Quail hunting from a car. So here's the picture: Cheney and his millionaire entourage are flying down a dusty Texas farm road in their camouflaged armored Humvees. They are followed by a Secret Service contingent in their own camouflaged Hummers. Bringing up the rear is a camouflaged ambulance, fully staffed with a Doctor,a nurse and 4 EMT's. The ambulance is chocked full of heart shockers other necessities to keep the VP alive in case his overtaxed ticker decides to cause trouble while he is enjoying his blood sport. Cheney has cradled in his arms a finely crafted instrument of torture and death-- a handcrafted, European-made, engraved and inlaid, exotic hardwood stock with etched, blue steel carbon barrels. This is what the VP has waiting in store for the speckled chirping terrorists ahead. He nervously fiddles with the gold triggers and the safety catch. Click, clack, click clack. A Secret Service agent radios ahead to Mary Matlin, who is crouched in the tall grasses about a quarter mile ahead of Cheney's posse. "Code Blue-- Release! Release!" Mary unlatches two little wire boxes and shoos the unsuspecting feathered occupants out into the tall grass to await the ambush. She marks the spot with a big RED flag. The Humvee skids up in a cloud of dust. The killers get out of the vehicle, hearts racing, safeties off... and then the unthinkable...

Edited on Sun Feb-12-06 09:20 PM by AnnieBW
You can see the video I did to this song for "Farscape" at http://umsa7.ums.edu/~anniebw/video/trigger.mov

Trigger Happy - Weird Al Yankovic
Got an AK-47, well you know it makes me feel all right
Got an Uzi by my pillow, helps me sleep a little better at night
There's no feeling any greater
Than to shoot first and ask questions later
Now I'm trigger happy, trigger happy every day

Well you can't take my guns away, I got a Constitutional right
Yeah, I gotta be ready if the commies attack us tonight
I'll blow their brains out with my Smith and Wesson
That out to teach 'em all a darn good lesson
Now I'm trigger happy, trigger happy every day

Oh yeah, I'm trigger, trigger happy
Yes, I'm trigger, trigger happy
(Oh baby, I'm) trigger, trigger happy
Yes, I'm trigger, trigger happy
(Oh, I'm so) trigger, trigger happy
Yes, I'm trigger, trigger happy
Better watch out, punk, or I'm gonna have to blow you away

Oh, I accidentally shot Daddy last night in the den
I mistook him in the dark for a drug-crazed Nazi again
Now why'd you have to get so mad?
It's just a lousy flesh wound, Dad
You know I'm trigger happy, trigger happy every day

Oh, I still haven't figured out the safety on my rifle yet
Little Fluffy took a round, better take him to the vet
I filled that kitty cat so full of lead
We'll have to use him for a pencil instead
Well, I'm trigger happy, trigger happy every day

Oh yeah, I'm trigger, trigger happy
Yes, I'm trigger, trigger happy
(Oh baby, I'm) trigger, trigger happy
Yes, I'm trigger, trigger happy
(Oh, I'm so) trigger, trigger happy
Yes, I'm trigger, trigger happy
Better watch out, punk, or I'm gonna have to blow you away

Come on and grab your ammo
What have you got to lose?
We'll all get liquored up
And shoot at anything that moves

Got a brand new semi-automatic weapon with a laser sight
Oh, I'm prayin' somebody tries to break in here tonight
I always keep a Magnum in my trunk
You better ask yourself, do you feel lucky, punk?
Because I'm trigger happy, trigger happy every day

Oh yeah, I'm trigger, trigger happy
Yes, I'm trigger, trigger happy
(Oh baby, I'm) trigger, trigger happy
Yes, I'm trigger, trigger happy
(Oh, I'm so) trigger, trigger happy
Yes, I'm trigger, trigger happy
Better watch out, punk, or I'm gonna have to blow you away

Within a week, Cheney shoots someone. Is he sending a message?

I.e.
- "I Dick Cheney, am untouchable, and can shoot people with impunity."
- "I Dick Cheney, am insane, and will shoot people on a whim."

I bet he doesn't even get a slap on the wrist for this.

489. Armstrong Ranch info
Tobin and his wife, Anne, (and daughter Katharine) have hosted many GOP dignitaries--including the first and second President Bush--on their 50,000-acre Armstrong Ranch in South Texas.

Katherine is the daughter of Pioneer Tobin Armstrong, an heir to the fabled Armstrong and King Ranch fortunes. Her mother, Anne Armstrong, who is Kay Bailey Hutchison’s best friend, helped launch the senator’s career as Republican National Committee co-chair in 1971.

492. "Swinging on game outside a safe zone" most common.
Texas Hunting Accidents Drop to Record Low

AUSTIN, March 14, 2005 - A new report shows Texas hunting accidents in 2004 decreased to the lowest amount since statistical records began in 1966. The number of people injured in hunting accidents in Texas decreased from 44 in 2003 to 29 in 2004, although fatalities increased from two to four during the same period.

The primary reason for Texas hunting accidents remains swinging on game outside a safe zone of fire. This happens when a person points a firearm at another hunter while following a moving target, such as a flying game bird. Hunter education teaches people to set up safe zones of fire where a gun can be safely pointed whether the target is moving or stationary.

Cheney was legally hunting with a license he purchased in November, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department spokesman Steve Lightfoot said. The vice president flew back to Washington on Sunday evening, according to his office.

503. From NYT article
(snip)

Mr. Whittington has been involved in a long-running dispute with the City of Austin, which is trying to condemn a block his family owns to build a parking garage. He has won several legal victories in the case, most recently last month in the Texas Supreme Court.

Lea Anne McBride, Mr. Cheney's spokeswoman, said, "The vice president visited with Harry Whittington at the hospital today and was pleased to see that he's doing fine and in good spirits." Asked why the vice president's office had made no announcement about the accident, Ms. McBride said, "We deferred to the Armstrongs regarding what had taken place at their ranch."

From Bradblog:

(snip)

At 7:00pm tonight CNN's anchor was interviewing a doctor from the hospital the shooting victim was in. The anchor asked him how the patient was doing and the doctor stated that he was in the Trauma ICU but stable. The anchor was then so dumb as to ask if the patient would be able to go home tonight. The doctor repeated that he was in ICU. This guys wounds did more than break the skin.

The local news just said Deadeye was carring a 28 gauge shotgun. I've never heard of one, but if the news blurb was accurate, that's a pansy ass weapon for big bad Dick to be carrying.

OK, a little googling has revealed that "The 28-gauge is a great choice for young shooters, recoil-conscious shooters, small-framed shooters and—as I learned when recovering from a shattered shoulder—shooters with damaged shoulders" http://www.progressivefarmer.com/farmer/rs/article/0,19846,1039478,00.html

So which is it Dick? Scared of recoil or just carrying a teeny tiny little gun? Is all the sneering, snarling war crap compensating for something?

The CNN account of what happened doesn't pass the smell test.

I doubt we will ever find out the truth, but what I think could have happened is this.

Cheney lost track of his hunting companions and when he heard Harry Whittington coming up behind him he thought some protester had penetrated Secret Service security then when Cheney turned around and Whittington didn't identify himself Cheney fired in "self-defense", dropping Whittington in his tracks.

He had to take him down easy

he ain't never gonna be the same

Cheney Cheney, what's your problem

554. And from Canada, the "Arrogant Worms" chime in with this little ditty...
Goin' Huntin'

Well me an' my buddies we got us some beer
And a great big bottle of rye
And boxes of ammo and guns to go with 'em
And good old Charlie's glass eye
Well we looked all around so we sees all of nature
So calm and so serene
But not for long 'cause we're gonna use guns
To make furry animals scream

'Cause we're goin' huntin'
We're gonna kill somethin'
I don't care what it is
Maybe a raccoon, maybe a gopher,
Maybe the neighbour's kids!
We're goin' huntin'
We're gonna kill somethin'
I don't care what it is
Maybe a raccoon, maybe a gopher,
Maybe the neighbour's kids!

Well off we go, our guns are loaded
And so's are we
We weaves through the bushes and falls on our faces
And piss on the nice trees
And then we spot something moving an' a rustle
We pump it full of lead
And smile real wide as we hear it scream
And thud as it falls down dead

'Cause we're goin' huntin'
We're gonna kill somethin'
I don't care what it is
Maybe a raccoon, maybe a gopher,
Maybe the neighbour's kids!
We're goin' huntin'
We're gonna kill somethin'
I don't care what it is
Maybe a raccoon, maybe a gopher,
Maybe the neighbour's kids!

Well off we go to see what we killed
And watch the damn thing bleed
The first thing we see is a bright orange cap
And we shot down Ol' Charlie
But he don't to mind, he smiled all the time
He died real happy
But next time he should tell us
When he's goin' off to take a pee

'Cause we're goin' huntin'
We're gonna kill somethin'
I don't care what it is
Maybe a raccoon, maybe a gopher,
Maybe the neighbour's kids!
We're goin' huntin'
We're gonna kill somethin'
I don't care what it is
Maybe a raccoon, maybe a gopher,
Maybe the neighbour's kids!

Well the sun goes down and we head back to town
And we hop in our pickup truck
Strap Charlie to the hood, start up the engine
Drive it home with any luck
Well what do you know, we run into a pole
But we're all still in one piece
And we get a free ride back into town
Courtesy of the police.

'Cause we're goin' huntin'
We're gonna kill somethin'
I don't care what it is
Maybe a raccoon, maybe a gopher,
Maybe the neighbour's kids!
We're goin' huntin'
We're gonna kill somethin'
I don't care what it is
Maybe a raccoon, maybe a gopher,
Maybe the neighbour's kids!

So how "in the bag" was Oily Dick Cheney when he shotgunned the ancient lawyer? Might explain why they waited hours to take the old codger to the hospital. What hasn't been reported in the MSM is the fact that VP was actually out at the "hunt club" for a dual-purpose weekend. The first reason is obvious: To massacre defenseless "farmed" birds. But the main reason was a photo-shoot. Mr. Cheney has signed on as the Official spokesman for "Nature's Viagra". The ad copy can be at

593. i love snotty's comment: "I think you can always look back at these issues
and look at how to do a better job," McClellan said when asked if he was satisfied how the situation was handled.

in other words, we're learning more about spin and PR every day, and someday we'll be able to completely control the press.

606. AFP -White House under fire over Cheney shooting 5:37 PM ET

Breaking with precedent, the White House did not disclose the information to the national media that cover Bush and Cheney. The news first came to light on Sunday at 1:48 pm (1948 GMT), when the Corpus Christi Caller-Times published Armstrong's account on its Internet site.

Cheney and Armstrong "agreed that she should make that information public. She was an eyewitness, she saw what occurred and she called her local paper to provide those facts," said McClellan.

Whittington was in stable condition in the intensive care unit at Christus Spohn Hospital Memorial, were he was treated for wounds to his shoulder, upper body, chest and neck, said hospital spokeswoman Michele Mora-Trevino.

Cheney aides continued to decline requests for an official timeline and details of the incident, pointing reporters to Armstrong's account and vouching for its accuracy.
