BERLIN (Reuters) - The Iranian embassy in Germany has demanded a written apology from a Berlin newspaper that printed a cartoon of Iranian soccer players dressed as suicide bombers and threatened legal action if none is forthcoming.

The sketch, published on Friday by Der Tagesspiegel, shows four moustachioed soccer players wearing Iran shirts with explosives strapped to their chests next to four German soldiers in a soccer stadium.

A caption above read: "Why the German army should definitely be used during the soccer World Cup!", referring to a debate in Germany about whether to use troops to help with security during the month-long tournament which begins June 9.

The cartoon's artist had received three death threats and had been forced to leave his apartment, he said.

During the recent "cartoon war" the nations of Europe didn't issue any sort of joint statement defending free speech that took place inside of one of their smallest members, Denmark. The Despots in the middle east correctly assessed this as weakness. Debacles like this do nothing but embolden bad guys all over the middle east. The leaders of the west are endlessly attacked by propoganda. It's part of our system and gives our leaders some relatively thick skin. When the President of Iran starts demanding apologies for what a stupid soccer team does on the other side of the world it shows how arrogant he's become. It also shows that he's feeling more comfortable all the time flexing his muscles. The more succesful he is at pushing our freedoms around, the more he's going to keep it up. He's got to realize that his soccer team can do and say whatever they want and our soccer team (and newspapers) can do the same. If we don't stand up for ourselves our free speech will get flushed down the toilet in the name of not offending radicals on the other side of the planet.

You're right, Radical Islam isn't on the move against Europe and it's other neighbors. Thousands of Iraqi civilians died in Gulf War II and lots of bad things happen around the world. Since the world has other problems it proves that radical Islam isn't flexing it's muscles from Europe to India and everywhere inbetween. I completely agree with you.

I'm not going to leap to assumptions about your motives but there are a number of obvious problems with your post above.

Firstly the entire list is unsubstantiated by way of reference material. Secondly, there is every possibility that a large number of the incidents reported on the list have been framed by whoever did the reporting, which is why, I think substantiation is important.

There has been much obvious twisting of the facts by the current US admistration and willing collaboration by large segments of the US media and right wing media in other countries that each and every report of bombings by "Islamic fundamentalists" and "Al Qaeda" have to be examined individually to determine the truth of the claim that the acts were in fact perpetrated by the people alleged for the motives alleged.

Given the level of unwarranted and clumsy Western interference in the Near East and North Africa, as well as the atrocious records of many governments in these areas, its conceivable that many "terrorist" attacks constitute justifiable resistance to opression.

Its undeniable that the predominantly Muslim regions of the Magrhib, the Arabian Peninsula and Southeast Asia are home to many violent Islamic fundamentalists. In Algeria especially, the excesses of fundamentalists have bevcome legendary after many turned on their own, each claiming a purer and truer interpretation of the faith.

But its also undeniable that the US and to a lesser extent Europe have meddled in these regions for over a century, propping up illegitimate rulers and clumsily manipulating affairs for their own economic interests. The US is currently illegally occupying a nation slap-bang in the middle of the Muslim world after illegally invading it in defiance of international treaties it is a signatory to.

Many of us are horrified at the human rights records of the more socially conservative societies of the Middle East, especially the state of women's rights. But the Western powers have clouded the moral landscape considerably in the last century with actions designed more to further economic interests that human rights, creating some legitimate reasons for violent resistance.

Non-Muslim India, too, is hardly spotless. Populist politicians have stirred up violent Hindu sentiments many times and Muslims have been the victims of Hindu mob violence and terrorism.

Simply listing long, unsubstantiated and unqualified lists of purportedly Muslim violence does nothing to further these discussions because its impossible to discern from the list alone (a) How many attacks were, in fact, motivated by fundamentalist Islamic beliefs (as opposed to say nationalism or revenge) (b) How many of the attacks were justified in terms of what preceded them and (c) How many of the attacks are part of an ongoing conflict in which all parties have the blood of innocents on their hands.

We (by which I mean people who believe in equal rights for all and non-imposition of religious morality) are fighting a culture war. But it will not be won by charicaturing and oversimplifying the "enemy". Only by understanding the inherent failings of "Western civilisation" (like "greed is good") and the valid greviances that drive people into the arms of violent fundamentalism, both at home and abroad, can we hope to win it. Try painting with a smaller brush.
