Poll: Fifth of Americans think calls have been monitored
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- About a fifth of Americans think federal agents have listened in on their phone calls, a CNN/USA Today/Gallup Poll released Tuesday suggests.

Twenty-one percent of the 1,000 adults who replied to the survey conducted Thursday through Sunday said it was very likely or somewhat likely their conversations had been wiretapped, while 52 percent said it was not at all likely.

Twenty-four percent said it was not too likely.

The sampling error for the question was plus or minus 3 percentage points.

3. I have also heard that 14% of Americans think that Oprah
is talking directly to them through their tv sets.

LOL, if we are taking polls on what uninformed people THINK is happening, and then calling it news, then we have real problems. Let's try to have this thread die a quick and painless death so that others don't have to take this poll too seriously.

5. It's much more than just a fifth of the population.
The way this form of tapping works, they are monitoring pretty much everyone. Everyone from the Senate to the military, to you and me. It all goes into a data warehouse. Information that falls into predefined patterns are stored, organized and brought to the attention of the appropriate personnel, which is the point that actual humans enter the equation. They can then pull up the records later, as required, for whatever reason they need. Data that falls outside these patterns gets flushed from whatever caching mechanism they are using, although for some lucky people I'm sure every word has been faithfully preserved. This is why Bush has no use for FISA. FISA requires a target and a reason.

I find it fitting that Halliburton is listed as HAL on the NYSE.

9. Hardly anybody understands this point.
They've got 'wiretap' stuck in their heads.

Keep pushing it though, eventually it will sink in.

7. I have proof they listen to me.
Ever since Il Douche appointed that whiney cadaver Jherk-off to replace Tommy Timbertoes Ridge-Runner at Homeless Insecurity, I've pissed and moaned about how that 1/4" "Miami Device" stubble made him look like a drunken old crackhound.

Notice his chin yesterday? He traded the Don Johnson look for some Barbasol.

Hey, Agent Mike! How they hangin' Bro?

It could be UK labour gov't in power and you can have your calls monitored AND have to have a mandatory biometric ID card...

So far the GOP hasn't gone that far...
(sarcasm)

11. I think they've listened in on mine...
And I'm not afraid to say so. My phone lines have been acting nuts and the phone company says nothing is wrong with them despite looking at them several times. The line hangs up randomly -- no matter what phone I use. If I pick it up sometimes there are voices on the other end. Lots of static and buzzing. Sometimes I answer the phone and it hangs up. I've heard the dial tone while in mid conversation and then the phone hangs up. There's always a clicking static after I'm on the phone about 30 seconds to a minute... No doubt in my mind.

15. I notice that they don't give any REAL info...
like what the actual question was, how the sample was obtained, who did the research, etc. That means that this "poll" could just as easily be an Internet poll (or even a "made up" result) as actual fact. One of the first things you learn about conducting polling and reporting the results is that these questions as well as several others MUST be answered in the report (that is, you can't just publish your conclusions and expect them to carry any weight).
