Wash. Orcas Listed As Endangered Species

Washington Orca Population Gets Endangered Species Listing

By PEGGY ANDERSEN

SEATTLE Feb 16, 2006 (AP)— Already designated a depleted species under one federal act, Washington state's killer whale population is getting more federal protection under another.

Since 2002, the orcas have been protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act, which kept them from being killed or harassed, but their listing under the Endangered Species Act gives them the highest protection available under the law.

1. Sad that they have to be near extinction before they're respected
Oh yeah...sorry about not caring about you for, like, ever. We'll start paying attention now that your survival is in jeopardy...kind of....I mean, so what if your brain melts from underwater sonar. Look, you're on the Endangered Species List. What, we're supposed to DO something else? Act in your behalf in a more meaningful way? Yeah. right. Greedy fuckin' whales...

2. Ever see an orca kill its prey?
They're absolutely savage creatures. I for one would be glad if Puget Sound were free of this menace. :sarcasm:

4. Kind of like the wolves, huh? Top predators often
have a savage side.

But the orcas are just so special - I'm glad they have become really protected.

Now if we could just keep the grizzlies completely protected. And all of the whales and dolphins. Well and all the other wild species.

I just think they all need protection and so does their habitat.

5. absolutely (sarcasm tag off)!
They are magnificent creatures, and as top predators, are a sensitive indicator of the health of an ecosystem.
