WASHINGTON - The USA Patriot Act is headed toward renewal with broad Senate support for a White House-brokered compromise that adds modest new civil liberties protections to the terror-fighting law.

"The outcome here is absolutely predetermined," Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., said late Wednesday. "It's going to pass with overwhelming support."

With even senior Democrats lining up behind the measure, its lone opponent, Sen. Russell Feingold, was preparing amendments he said would strengthen its curbs on government power. Congress is racing to renew 16 provisions of the law that are set to expire March 10.

........He may not get the chance to offer the changes to the full Senate, a development that Feingold said rendered the debate a "sham."

7. Exactly - when we lose our freedoms
the terorists have truly won. Our civil liberties are what makes us Americans and what makes this country great. By taking away our rights, we cease to be a great country, and our enemies win.

9. Let me guess...
...with the election coming up, the Poow Scawed Wittwe Democwats think that, if they balk at renewal, they'll be attacked for being "soft on security."

Just the same way they gave Bush a blank check on Iraq so that they wouldn't have their patriotism or committment to fighting terrorism questioned in 2002. We all know how well that worked.

:argh:

11. Senate voted 96-3. This is so depressing.
I see Senator Byrd voted against it, now that there's no chance it will be killed.

12. What are the Democrats Doing?????
First they run Paul Hackett out of town, then they line up like lap dogs to vote for the Patriot Act. Not a good week for the Demos in Congress.

14. Boo on the Dems!
Russ Feingold, Robert Byrd, and Jim Jeffords were the only 3 Senators to vote against the PATRIOT extension. The rest of the Democrats did what they have done so well since 9-11, they bent over and let Bush assume more dictatorial powers.

It is for reasons such as these that so many progressives have given up on the Democratic Party, a party that has become a rubber stamp for the Bush dictatorship.

Our Republic is mortally wounded, and few of our politicians in Washington seem to care at all!
