13. Apparently Iran has "forfeited" it's right to develop peaceful nuke progs
"(4) declares that Iran , through its many breaches for almost 20 years of its obligations under the Safeguards Agreement, has forfeited the right to develop any aspect of a nuclear fuel cycle, especially with uranium conversion and enrichment and plutonium reprocessing technology, equipment, and facilities;"

At least according to Congress...So this will probably be the justification for some kind of military action. "Well, they might not be developing a weapons program but they are not allowed to build nuclear reactors."

Who are the 4 Nays? Kucinich?

Let's face the facts head-on first, then we can have a realistic discussion of the options.

France: Iran program 'military'

Thursday, February 16, 2006; Posted: 2:12 p.m. EST (19:12 GMT

PARIS, France (CNN) -- Iran's nuclear activity is a cover for a clandestine weapons program, French Foreign Minister Philippe Douste-Blazy has said in France's most direct attack on Tehran in the escalating international dispute.

14. I finally found a link:
The House of Representatives on Thursday, by a vote of 404 to four, passed a resolution condemning the government of Iran for resuming its nuclear program.

The resolution condemns Tehran for violating its nuclear nonproliferation obligations and expresses support for efforts -- including possible United Nations sanctions -- to ensure it meets its international commitments.

"Protecting American citizens from terrorism means keeping a watchful eye on nations like Iran," Republican House Speaker Dennis Hastert said.

"The Iranian government has blatantly ignored its international obligations and the Paris Agreement and instead headed down a path of dangerous, deadly destruction.

18. Outing of Plame set the stage for a ginned up war against Iran
Edited on Thu Feb-16-06 04:04 PM by pberq

Outed CIA officer was working on Iran, intelligence sources say

Larisa Alexandrovna
Published: February 13, 2006

The unmasking of covert CIA officer Valerie Plame Wilson by White House officials in 2003 caused significant damage to U.S. national security and its ability to counter nuclear proliferation abroad, RAW STORY has learned.

According to current and former intelligence officials, Plame Wilson, who worked on the clandestine side of the CIA in the Directorate of Operations as a non-official cover (NOC) officer, was part of an operation tracking distribution and acquisition of weapons of mass destruction technology to and from Iran.

Speaking under strict confidentiality, intelligence officials revealed heretofore unreported elements of Plame's work. Their accounts suggest that Plame's outing was more serious than has previously been reported and carries grave implications for U.S. national security and its ability to monitor Iran's burgeoning nuclear program. . .

Here's another angle from Rawstory, also related to Plame's outing (which is explained in the article quoted below this one):

http://rawstory.com/news/2005/Backchannels_used_to_bypass_U.S._government_0111.html

Spurious attempt to tie Iran, Iraq to nuclear arms plot bypassed U.S. intelligence channels

Larisa Alexandrovna
Published: January 11, 2006

Update: Retired Paris CIA station chief Bill Murray confirms and corrects.

Several U.S. and foreign intelligence sources, along with investigators, say an Iranian exile with ties to Iran-Contra peddled a bizarre tale of stolen uranium to governments on both sides of the Atlantic in the spring and summer of 2003.

The story that was peddled -- which detailed how an Iranian intelligence team infiltrated Iraq prior to the start of the war in March of 2003, and stole enriched uranium to use in their own nuclear weapons program -- was part of an attempt to implicate both countries in a WMD plot. It later emerged that the Iranian exile was trying to collect money for his tales, sources say.

http://www.antiwar.com/justin/?articleid=8548

. . .The exposure of Plame and her entire operation – Brewster Jennings & Associates, the CIA front company that cloaked this super-secret tracking program – effectively blinded the U.S. to the evolution of Iran's nuclear program. Not long after the outing of Plame – and just after a grand jury began hearing testimony in the Fitzgerald investigation – another security breach involving Iran made headlines: the Iranians had been alerted to the fact that the U.S. had broken the code governing their internal government communications, with the chief suspects being the neoconservative version of Che Guevara, Ahmed Chalabi, and his Iraqi National Congress, the source of much of the phony pre-invasion "intelligence" about Iraq. The truth about Iran's WMD (or lack of same) was rendered inaccessible, leaving the field open for the neocons and their foreign operatives to move into the vacuum and keep their very effective lie factory working overtime.

A familiar cast of characters stars in this tale of intrigue and disinformation: Manucher Ghorbanifar, the Iranian arms merchant and master of deception, who, along with neoconservative guru Michael Ledeen – another player in this drama – was entangled in the Iran-Contra affair. Larry Franklin makes a guest appearance at a meeting in Rome where the plot was reportedly hatched. Oh, and a mysterious Iranian named "Ali," who, it turns out, is the pseudonym for Fereidoun Mahdavi, a former minister under the Shah, now a secretary to Ghorbanifar.

It would have been Plame's job to debunk Ali's tall tales. Knocking her and Brewster Jennings out of the running was necessarily a top priority for those with an interest in targeting Iran. There is a lot more here than has come to the attention of the "mainstream" media, and, again, Alexandrovna is digging where others fear to tread.

All indications are that an active campaign to set up Iran for attack was going full gear even as George W. Bush was declaring "mission accomplished" in Iraq. As we look at the different pieces of the puzzle, a definite picture begins to emerge: what we are seeing are the outlines of a coordinated covert action, engineered by neoconservative ideologues in and around the Pentagon and Dick Cheney's office, and carried out in cooperation with the Israelis. Their objective: gin up a war with Iran, even as we marched into Iraq. A one-two punch that will speed the forces of "democratization" and visit upon the region what Ledeen lauds as "creative destruction."

21. One really important aspect of this
that Kucinich pointed out, is that Russia is trying to work with Iran so that they will do the uranium enrichment for them, meaning that Iran wouldn't have the actual equipment to do it themselves. It would also make it very difficult for Iran to make nuclear weapons because the uranium they received would be in controlled amounts and have oversight. If the UN Security Resolution is passed, this compromise would apparently become impossible because they wouldn't be allowed to have any nuclear equipment or facilities even for energy.

In essence, Russia may have been able to help reach a COMPROMISE and our Congress is trying to make that impossible. Later, our lovely leaders will say 'they refused to compromise or cooperate' just like they did with Iraq.

It's the same script. They changed 1 letter and are replaying the whole thing.

I am copying this from an above post:

I think this is key. The decision to go to war has already been made - just like it was in Iraq. They are just setting it up the same way they did before.

32. Accountable for what, exactly?
Last time I checked, the only thing iran has done is run a nuclear enrichment program, which is entirely legal in both the context of International Law (UN charte, Non-Proliferation Treaty, etc.) and their domestic laws. We have no proof other than allegations by people who have vested interests in the US/UN taking out the current Iranian regime that they are conducting a weapons program. Valerie Plame was in charge of the Iranian anti-nuke program, but that's pretty much gone to hell in a handbasket since little dickie decided to out her.

Edited on Thu Feb-16-06 07:44 PM by Clarkie1
And their leader is a fanatic.

Any regime which calls for the annihilation of a sovereign state and denies the holocaust must be held accountable by all humanity. Therefore...

We need to have all our options on the table, but I'm afraid this administration is incapable of doing anything but preparing for military action (which may in fact become necessary).

A military strike on Iran would have serious, far-reaching consequences for the U.S. and NATO...so would a nuclear Iran. One difference is that this time all of NATO would be with us, but that doesn't negate the serious consequences for East/West relations in a time of rising polarization and religious fanaticism.

This is a serious dilemma and there are no easy answers. Unfortunately, that's the only kind of "answers" this administration understands.

Iran hs a much better self defense capability than Iraq did. Our naval surface forces would be sitting ducks and our army is about tapped out. The Navy boomer drivers would love to have a chance to justify their existence once again. They could mobilize and no one would know until the trigger is pulled.

I had read reports that they REALLY want to test out those larger nuke bunker-busters and there has been a huge push for more development of so-called "smaller yield" nukes. If this plays out, I'm expecting Israel would launch conventional weapons, followed by our nukes in response to Iran's response. It makes me want to puke thinking about it.

Iran is developing nukes. I think that's a complete joke. Why would they even have to go down that road if they are allied with Russia and China - not to mention the fact that those two countries would side with them in a war anyway. They would probably have an easier time buying blackmarket nukes than trying to develop their own. I see this as nothing but a fabricated excuse.

50. And bushCabal will use that $75 mil to fund TERRORISTS (the MEK)
Edited on Thu Feb-16-06 05:28 PM by LynnTheDem
to commit terrorism and "foment rebellion" in Iran.

Then the USA will stab the MEK in the back (again), just as the USA did to Saddam Hussein, Ho Chi Minh, the Taleban, Usama bin Laden...et-bloody-cetera.

When the MEK retaliate, Americans will sit shocked & stunned and wonder why do they hate us.

52. Lynn, we both know the US Admin is bent on doing the nuke thing again . .
.
.
.

They got their shorts wet dropping bombs on Japan while the Japanese were trying to surrender

They love KILLING!

The United States will fall as a result, but they don't care -

The PNACers will be safely housed in offshore islands/countries and sit back and watch the world go to shit

And spend the Billions of dollars they have drinking Pina Coladas, playing golf, and shooting the odd "friend" while they are "hunting" trapped birds . . .

The USA is just a big playground for the Illuminati (FreeMasons) - has been for over 2 centuries -

They don't care if the USA gets blown all to hell, they won't be there!

Why do you think their military has more people around the globe than at "home" ??? -

Cuz that ain't gonna BE their home in the near future . . .

Bush and his gang are just visiting - have been since Prescott in WW2

"Taking care of business" - raping the USA citizens for their private incomes to finance their global dreams

A "legal" Mafia if you like

Sumthing to think about . . . .

55. I was reading your first line & thought WOW an American who knows
the FACT about the nuking of Japanese civilians as Japan was trying to surrender...then I saw your DU name.

**Actually that's not fair of me, coz I did see a US poll a couple years ago where 58% said dropping those nukes on Japan was a war crime & shouldn't have been done, so not all Americans are blinded by the WWII propaganda.**

57. Yeah, and so is the US

on top of all the nukes we already have. The difference is, by US intelligence estimates, Iran is 10 years away from theirs. Not to mention that this resolution will essentially wipe out a compromise deal with Russia, which would allow Russia to do the enrichment for them, thus making it more measurable and trackable than if they do it on their own. So in a few months our great leaders can say Iran 'refused to compromise' when in reality, we made the compromise impossible.

Link to the US's new exciting nuclear program (gee, wonder how that filts with the NPT? Hmmm...):

49. When will Rummy, Cheney and Wolfowitz be condemned?
From The Nation:

http://www.thenation.com/doc/20050516/infact

Stephen Zunes writes:

"The Washington Post reported that an initially hesitant President Ford was assured by his advisers that Iran was interested only in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy. Ford's Defense Secretary was Donald Rumsfeld, his Chief of Staff was Dick Cheney and his man in charge of nonproliferation efforts at the Arms Control and Disarmament Agency was Paul Wolfowitz."

When are those who are responsible for creating the instability in the first place going to be held accountable for their past mistakes??
