FRANKFORT, Ky. -- A rock fall at an underground coal mine in eastern Kentucky killed a worker who was moving equipment Thursday, a state official said.
No one else was hurt in the roof collapse at the TECO Coal Corp. mine near Hazard, the company said in a news release. It identified the victim as Tim Caudill, a 33-year-old roof bolter who since 2001 had worked in the mine, operated by TECO subsidiary Perry County Coal Corp.
Mark York, spokesman for the Kentucky Cabinet for Environmental and Public Protection, said the victim was taken to a local hospital, but added that he didn't know whether the victim died at the mine or the hospital.
"Obviously, our investigation has already begun to determine the cause of the accident," York said.
Twenty U.S. miners have been killed on the job so far this year -- 12 of them following an explosion at a West Virginia mine last month. In all of 2005, a record-low 22 miners were killed.
