SIERRA MADRE, Calif. -- Marilyn Diaz will become the first female city police chief in Los Angeles County when she takes the helm of the Sierra Madre Police Department in mid-March, it was reported Friday.
Diaz, a commander with the Pasadena Police Department, told the Pasadena Star-News that in her 32 years of police work she had never considered becoming a chief -- until the position opened in her hometown.
"I live there, I love the community," Diaz told the Star-News. "It's charming and truly historic with tremendous community support. It's the only place I applied and the only place I considered working."
Diaz, 54, is leaving one of the top posts in a police department with about 250 sworn personnel for one with 17. Her new salary will be $94,428.
