Rumsfeld says U.S. will not close Gitmo
AMY WESTFELDTAssociated PressNEW YORK -

The Pentagon will not close its Guantanamo Bay prison for terrorist suspects, despite U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan's call to shut it down, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld said Friday.
"He's just flat wrong," Rumsfeld said in response to a question about the controversial prison during an appearance at the Council on Foreign Relations. "We shouldn't close Guantanamo. We have several hundred terrorists - bad people, people that if let back out on the field would try to kill Americans. That's just a fact."
He said closing it would amount to pretending there is no problem with a terrorist threat to U.S. interests.
Rumsfeld also took a swipe at Annan, saying, "He's never been to Guantanamo Bay," whereas representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross "stayed there, lived there 24 hours a day" to observe conditions.
"That place is being run as well as any detention facility can be run," he added, his voice rising. "It's absolutely beyond comprehension," he said, that calls for closing Guantanamo Bay can be based on allegations of mistreatment and torture by the prisoners, whom Rumsfeld said are trained to lie....

1. Don Rumsfeld is the Sec. of Defense who has presided over the
disastrous Iraq invasion, the under-funding and non-planning of the occupation, the seething lies spewing from the Pentagon left and right over operations there, and of course, the unpardonable brutality of Guantanamo and Abu Ghraib.

A diseased rat has a nobler legacy.

2. I cannot believe he publicly called Kofi Annan a liar.
along with not cooperating with the demands of closing Gitmo.

Even if he wants to keep it open, he could work with the UN to make it
more "acceptable".

I feel that this administration is trying to get the whole world against us.

3. Well-put and right-on. I have a lot of respect for Kofi Annan. A lot.
And almost none at all for Sec. Rumsfeld.

I appreciate your post on this, pirhana.

22. Rumsfeld is a mental case...
I heard him the other day, talking about Gitmo. As the article states, his voice was rising. He sounded more agitated the longer he talked. The guy ain't right. I have a feeling that if they closed Gitmo it would deprive Rummy of one of his, um....guilty pleasures. Just sayin'.

To the Hague with the lot of them!!! :grr:

29. Rumsfeld gets sexually aroused at the prospect of TORTURE
His own organ is so limp most of the time

It is fit only to attach his bladder to the outside world (unless aroused by violence)

32. You are correct. Rummy is a sadist..
That pic of him at Abu Ghraib, standing with Janis Karpinski and another officer. (It's been posted here numerous times). Something tells me it was a productive junket for him. Ahem...he likes to watch, methinks.

Rotten, sick bastard! He needs to be put away for life.

4. He's not calling Annan a liar. He's saying Annan is misinformed.
All because the UN inspectors wouldn't accept a visit to be put through the dog and pony show they reserve for VIP's that don't include interviews with the detainees because, you know, they're all liars, you can only believe the jailers, never the jailed. Oh, and every single one of them is a terrorist and that is a fact.

17. And we all know how GREAT Rumpswab's credibility is!
Can you imagine f-ing so many important, far-reaching things so f-ing badly and still showing no shame, no humility at all? I think I feel worse after I cut someone off in traffic! This dude is pathologically full of himself.

19. Yes. He really is. I get irked listening to him in interviews, when
he asks questions and then answers them. It's unsettling.

His retort to reporters ("Stuff happens") when the Iraqi National Museum was raided and looted was just one of the unforgivable things he's said, but it's the one that sticks with me the longest.

9. "terrorists" ... L.I.A.R.
Five Chinese Muslims the U.S. military admits were captured by mistake want the U.S. Supreme Court`s help in getting out of the Guantanamo Bay military prison. Their capture and detention in the Cuban facility for more than four years has created a legal dilemma for the Bush administration, which fears releasing them back to China where they could face torture, yet refuses to grant them asylum for fear of opening floodgates to others.
http://news.monstersandcritics.com/northamerica/article_1097256.php/%60Mistake%60_captives_languish_at_Guantanamo

Compiled from declassified Defense Department evaluations of the more than 500 detainees at the Cuba facility, the report says just 8 percent are listed as fighters for a terrorist group, while 30 percent are considered members of a terrorist group and the remaining 60 percent were just "associated with" terrorists.

55 percent of the detainees are informally accused of committing a hostile act. But the descriptions of their actions ranged from a high-ranking Taliban member who tortured and killed Afghan natives to people who possessed rifles, used a guest house or wore olive drab clothing.

18. OK fine Rummy
I'll assume they are bad people as you say.

Then try them in a court of law already for God's sake!

The US is keeping these people in legal limbo. They aren't quite POWs but they aren't going to be tried in American courts. They aren't entitled to Geneva protections...WTF are they? GITMO makes absolutely no sense.

GITMO made sense as a TEMPORARY holding facility, but several years later it's just another place of abuse and torture.

27. That's the issue. He jumped the point.
Closing Gitmo isn't the same as releasing all those guys back "into the field".

Let's just get the operation under some kind of legal auspicies so that we are operating under the "rule of law".

28. Gee Donnie, coming from you,
a guy who's known worldwide for his, um, credibility, that's reassuring as hell. I'm, like, totally more likely to believe what a Cult Of Bush member has to say about Gitmo, especially after viewing the newly released photos from your stunning success with Abu Ghraib. Carry on, Donnie, I'm sure there's some cult meeting on torture you need to attend.
