Seattle tells GOP thanks but no thanks
ANOTHER city tells the GOP to go Cheney itself.
http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/jamieson/260077_robert18.html?dpfrom=thead

The GOP is eyeing Seattle as a possible site for the 2008 Republican National Convention.

... Chicago's Mayor Richard Daley said thanks but no thanks this week. Chicago wants to focus on a possible bid for the 2016 Summer Olympics.

San Diego sounded a similar note. Mayor Jerry Sanders, in a statement, said, "The city has other important priorities."

As for Seattle? The city is taking a pass, too, a spokesman for Mayor Greg Nickels said Friday. "There's the question of whether we even have a facility to hold such a convention," spokesman Marty McOmber said. "And the issue of having enough hotel rooms. We're not going to bid for it."

54. Other Priorities.
We do have other priorities...like an underfunded pension estimated at between 2 & 4 billion dollars....that BILLION!. San Diego is in a financial MESS and we have no business taking on the expense of a dog and pony show like this. I'm glad it's not going to be here. We can't afford the Dems either sad to say.

16. So do us Eugene ans who like to go to Portland fêtes
They can hold their convention at their favorite compound hiding out in the hotel at the airport. That sure would be allot of people to fearfully hide away there.

Bush pissed me off when he was in Beaverton and refused to get done with his speech in a timely manner to allow Kerry live access. Many people roasted in the sun by the Willamette as everyone waited for the duel for TV access to be finished.

I'd love to see the GOP come here. (The whole world's watching! The whole world's watching! The whole world's watching!) The thought of a GOP version of the Democratic convention in 1968 in Chicago occurring here in PDX is acceptable as many of us have allot to say to those purple band aide wearing pricks.

I really do like a large crowd with a good Eugene contingent working in it. Be it at the WTO in Seattle, or at a GOP gathering in Little Beirut, Portland's oft used nickname.

56. If they come to Portland...I'm there
In October of 1988 when Bush I came to Tacoma, he tried to "hand pick" the audience. Through hook and crook, seven of us got into the event. Before that we had 500 people outside the convention verbally roughing up the Bush/Pat Robertson crowd. By the time they got in, they were fried. Once Bush started speaking he was ask questions by our seven. On the third question the Republican Private Security service started swinging. They hustled Bush out of there 17 minutes early. Since then a Republican candidate has not campaigned for president inside the Tacoma city limits. It was the lead story on all three major networks. I'd love to do an encore!!!

Nice to meet another Cascadian/Oregonian in here. Bush should come back out here anyway this election season. We all would love a chance to drop what we are doing and let him know in numbers we know he is a pimp whoring our natural resources to the corporate elite, a war criminal, a murderer, and a fascist pig.

If it weren't for the massive amounts of damage to people and property, and the burdensome cleanup bill, and the invitation to ridiculous levels of police brutality, it would almost be worth doing for the spectacle alone.

Maybe the GOP would get a more receptive population in Prineville?

The other night someone suggested having it in Baghdad. That way they could PROVE to everyone how "safe" Iraq is becoming, now that there's DEMOCRACY there, dontcha know.

48. RFP went to 31 cities. Security costs have got to be a major concern
Anaheim, Atlanta, Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, Columbus, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Houston, Indianapolis, Los Angeles, Kansas City, Memphis, Miami, Minneapolis, Nashville, New Orleans, New York, Orlando, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Pittsburgh, Portland, Sacramento, San Antonio, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, St. Louis, and Tampa.

REQUEST FOR PROPOSAL

The Request for Proposal (RFP) is an outline of basic, minimum requirements that cities must meet in order to host the Republican National Convention. During negotiations with cities, the minimum requirements may be amended and additional obligations may be added. The cities’ response to this proposal will be incorporated into the final agreement between the city and the RNC’s Committee on Arrangements (COA).

A city interested in hosting the convention must establish a Host Committee. The requirements outlined in the RFP may be met by the City and/or Host Committee. Regulations promulgated by the Federal Election Commission provide the rules that govern national political conventions and Host Committees.

Facilities
Main Convention Area – facility capable of seating at least 20,500 persons, including the convention floor with seating for approximately 5,500 delegates and alternates.

The RFP details the minimum requirements, including square footage of space required and the timing of when the space must be available, for the following facilities – convention function rooms (for meetings and committee sessions), convention office space, media work space, parking, city facilities for convention related activities (halls, museums, parks, etc.) and a construction area for construction of the convention podium.

Provision of Facilities & Services
The City and/or Host Committee shall provide facilities and services necessary to hold the convention as determined by the COA, including: seating for delegates and attendees, electrical power, lighting, a sound system, a transportation system, heating and air conditioning and a telecommunications system.

Security Measures
All provisions of security and related protective services shall be provided at the sole cost of the City and/or Host Committee except security measures for which the federal government agrees to pay.

Hotels
The City and/or Host Committee shall make at least 20,000 hotel rooms and 2,000 one and two bedroom suites available to the COA
