Cartoon row: Attack on US embassy in Indonesia
Hundreds of Muslim protesters attacked the US embassy in Indonesia with rocks and sticks on Sunday. Several people were injured.

Meanwhile, security forces in Pakistan sealed off Islamabad and used tear gas and gunfire to quash a banned protest.

About 400 people arrived at the heavily fortified US mission in Jakarta, marching behind a banner that read "we are ready to attack the enemies of the Prophet."

They tried to storm the gates, brandishing wooden staves and lobbing stones. They also set fire to the US national flag and a poster of President George W Bush.

3. this likely Not about cartoons. there is another agenda
here cartoons are given as the excuse.

kinda like how bush used 9/11 as his excuse for his various schemes.

5. Does anyone think this is about the "cartoons" anymore?
How about all the shit...the invasion of Iraq, Abu Garaib, now MORE Abu Garaib, cutting of Palistine from aid, the Brits beating children.

They've got pictures of Bush. How much longer is this outpouring of protest going to be completely laid at the feet of the offending cartoons?

6. I agree that the cartoons are an excuse
Let's see. There's a film out about the Tipton Three, three English Muslims who went to Afghanistan for a wedding and wound up at Gitmo for several years. It has just come out. Just this week, the latest batch of prisoner abuse photos from Abu Graib were published in Australia and elsewhere. The cartoons mocked the Prophet (pbuh) and showed distain for Islam; the actions at the two prisons go much much further. I can see where Musllims in the ME and East may well be wondering if the West isn't out to destroy Islam. We haven't seen anything from Bushco except forget the photos and let's expand Gitmo.

9. Just to stir the pot a little, they arrested the 3 people AND the actors
when they came back from the Berlin film festival. Reporting by Craig Murray, the ex-British Ambassador to Uzbekistan, who resigned/was pushed out when he went public with how the British government turned a blind eye to Uzbeki torture:

Last week the three ex-detainees travelled to the Berlin Festival with the Winterbottom party, and were arrested on Friday under the Prevention of Terrorism Act as the party were returning. They were held by Special Branch and questioned for several hours about where they had been and who they had met. They were also questioned on Michael Winterbottom's politics.

Even more worrying, the three actors who portrayed them in the film were also arrested and questioned. The actors have no particular political or religious affiliation and were also arrested apparently purely on the basis that they were Asian. None of the white members of the group were arrested.

Following legal intervention by Gareth Peirce, the group were eventually released. Special Branch claimed they had not been arrested, merely detained under the Prevention of Terrorism Act.

10. So does anyone have a plan
Does anyone on the DU think we can change the way America is viewed across the Globe? I'm not being cynical, I'm seriously asking if anyone has good ideas about changing US policy? Or has * and Friends so damaged our world standing as to make it almost impossible? (I personally don't think * is completely to blame.)

15. Because you asked
A protest organizer said the West, and particularly the United States, is attacking Islam.

"They want to destroy Islam through the issue of terrorism ... and all those things are engineered by the United States," said Maksuni, who only uses one name.

"We are fighting America fiercely this time," he said. "And we also are fighting Denmark."
