N.J. Senator Latest to Assail Port Sale
Feb 20, 2006

http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/wireStory?id=1642112

NEWARK, N.J. Feb 20, 2006 (AP)— Democratic senators assailed an Arab company's takeover of operations at six major American ports and said Monday that President Bush should stop the deal to better protect the U.S. from terrorists.

"We wouldn't turn over our customs service or our border patrol to a foreign government," New Jersey Sen. Robert Menendez said during a news conference. "We shouldn't turn over the ports of the United States, either."

Menendez said he and New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton will introduce legislation prohibiting the sale of port operations to foreign governments.

Elected officials from both parties have criticized the government's approval of last week's purchase of London-based Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Co., by Dubai Ports World, a state-owned business in the United Arab Emirates, or UAE. Peninsular and Oriental runs major commercial operations in New Jersey, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, New Orleans, Miami and Philadelphia.

7. I agree
There are those who think that there shouldn't be a single Arab investments in the US, while we are out there meddling with their governments and their democracies. So far we have Saudi Arabia that invests billions of their oil purse in the US stock market and any trouble over there can be seen as trouble for the US stock marker including the oil markets. This UAE port deal is nothing other than investment by the UAE's part to invest in the US economy.

We have many bases in the Arab world and that is a fact many would describe as security concerns, but would never mention the feeling others have about US presence in the same ports and soils in the ME. Its hypocritical at best to feel that international company such as this one in question would sponsor terrorism within the US ports. A hypocrisy reinforces the idea that all Arabs whether by individual or company has no trustworthy in the eyes of Americans.

"With all due respect to Mr. Chertoff," O'Malley said. "He was also the Homeland Security secretary who went to sleep after he was informed the levees had broken in New Orleans."

9. When will the AP ever get a headline
right. Hell, if I am not mistaken it was Senators Clinton and Mendenez that was going to introduce a bill before the Senate, and this I read on Friday afternoon late. Hell, they were the first 2 to come out of the gate on this issue, but leave it to the AP and write a Header that looks like they are part of a growing number against this sale, but in all reality, they were the first.....
