Halifax — Canada will sign a new defence treaty with the U.S. this spring that will beef up protection in the sea lane approaches to North America.

But newly appointed Defence Minister Gordon O'Connor says an expanded NORAD pact will not compromise Canada's control over its own military, nor will it mean an automatic acceptance of ballistic-missile defence.

... During a stop in Halifax on Monday, he suggested that it will be more an information-sharing exercise than allowing Americans free rein in Canadian waters.

If Canada is approached about joining Washington's missile-defence program, he said, the Conservatives will put the matter before Parliament.
