Soldier - Mother Reassigned to Fort Carson
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Filed at 4:32 a.m. ET

FORT CARSON, Colo. (AP) -- A soldier who stayed home with her children during a custody battle rather than returning to Iraq was reassigned to Fort Carson, but also received a conflicting message she could face criminal charges.

Spc. Simone Holcomb, a medic in the Colorado National Guard, was reassigned Monday to Fort Carson to give her time to find care for her children or get out of the Army, post spokesman Lt. Col. Tom Budzyna said.

``She's been reassigned to Fort Carson for compassionate reasons and she's in the process of being demobilized from active duty status to National Guard status,'' Budzyna said late Monday.

1. as much as it sucks...
...if she was not given a leave of absence for this then she is in violation of Army Regs. Most likely she'll get an "General Discharge" which will automatically upgrade to "Honorable" after a set time. Though it dosen't look like it from the outside the military is usually very good about taking care of it's own.

5. Well, they used to be...
Until their Commander in Chief became a man whose chief interest is satisfying the command of the special interest so vital to his election. She may very well become an example.

2. They blinked
Someone in the chain of command grew a brain and realized what an unbelievable disaster it woul be for her to wind up in jail. I am sure the military got numerous phone calls from Repubs (who suddenly found time during their divorce proceedings or time with the mistress) to reinforce their compassion conservative and family values viewpoints.

They will now wait for the lights to fade before actually making a decision.

Later,
JM the Cynic

3. Bull! This is hardly a blink.
Something like this isn't that unusual. Soldiers get reassigned for compassionate reasons every year. When I was working at Corps HQ I processed three sets of orders myself. That was just for the officer side of the house.

4. The real story behind this story is about the natural birth mother!
Nobody seems to be paying any attention to the plight of the natural birth mother who tired to get custody of her two children while the custodial parents were both out of the country. What is wrong with this picture?

6. plight of the natural birth mother?
Sounds to me like she tried to take advantage of the fact that both parents are off in Iraq, and used that to backdoor the legal process for obtaining custody. Hardly worthy of empathy.

7. I agree with frylock, the biological mother took advantage
of the situation in order to get even with her ex. The Army is also to blame for deploying both parents at the same time (custodial parents are parents too).

This case should have never gone as far as it did. I wonder how many other families are similarly situated. Worse yet, they keep activating more Guard units every day rather than admit the fact they don't have enough troops for all the commitments Bush has made around the world.

They can bring conscription back, or they can bring the troops home. I vote for bringing the troops home!
