Bush says Dubai port deal should go for forward
21 Feb 2006 20:41:04 GMT

Source: Reuters

ABOARD AIR FORCE ONE, Feb 21 (Reuters) - President George W. Bush said on Tuesday that a deal for a state-owned Dubai company to manage major U.S. ports should go forward and will not jeopardize U.S. security.

Bush told reporters traveling back to Washington with him from Colorado that he would veto legislation to stop the deal from going through.

"After careful review by our government, I believe the transaction ought to go forward," Bush said. He added that if the U.S. Congress passed a law to stop the deal, "I'll deal with it with a veto."

Angry disclaimer... read with caution:

They have turned their backs on America for greed and power. Even if they did stand up, they are done for many years to come!

And I will make sure Republicans know THEY are to blame for the pain this country is gonna go through! Not to mention the death they are directly responsible for. Fuck em!

Edited on Wed Feb-22-06 10:45 AM by wishlist
I saw David Kay, U.N. inspector on CSpan a year or two ago and was struck by his comments about the direct links between terrorism, illegal arms shipments and drug smuggling and that these activities all link together. I wonder how much he knows about Bush/Cheney ties with these activities. He was very circumspect and careful in his comments but left door wide open for speculation and further inquiry.

Bush has never vetoed a bill before. Now, he's finally taking a stand on the one issue he apparantly really cares about - UAE ownership of ports.(???) This country is just too crazy anymore. He won't back down on this either, I'm convinced.

134. He will back down on this
They either planned it in the first place (OK, no UAE, we choose Halliburton instead), or, and more likely, they're already planning to cave since nobody will support them on this, but they're waiting until the last second and looking for a way to save face.

I have a hard time believing that this is what * is using to overtly assume the mantle of dictator, if only because he would be making such a move from a position of great weakness. This is no way to officially kick off your dictatorship.

Edited on Tue Feb-21-06 07:09 PM by Marie26
What you've said makes a lot of sense, but this Administration isn't making much sense. Knowing how unpopular this is, why would they approve the deal at all? You could say they didn't know how controversial it would be at first. OK, now they know - this deal is alienating even base Republicans, and almost all politicians have disagreed. So, when a scandal breaks & the deal is roundly criticized - Bush chooses to theaten a VETO? What kind of politician does that?

This deal is VERY important to Bush - so important that he's chosen to basically piss off most of the country to get it. Why? I think UAE must have given him something pretty massive in return. And it's not money. Money doesn't explain why Bush would take such a political hit. It has to do w/something else. I suspect it has something to do with the military favors in the "War On Terror" - maybe UAE will let us use their airspace, build US bases, or launch missiles at Iran from there. Bush is planning something; and this port deal allows him to put that plan into implementation. He NEEDS this - you can feel it. And he just doesn't care anymore how unpopular it is, or what we think. He will get it done. So it's not so much that Bush is using this to "kick off" his dictatorship; but that this is such an essential step that he'll create a const. showdown if he has to in order to get it.

I got curious about what Repubs. would have to say about this news. They're even more upset with Bush than we are!

"He signed the odious campaign finance reform bill and every lousy spending bill that has been passed in his five years on the job. But he's going to veto this one? Maybe he really is as stupid as his detractors have been saying all these years." That's right.

There was no support at all. And a number of people posted to openly mock the "Bushbots," or to complain that all Bush cares about is corporate money. There's even speculation that Bush could have some ulterior motive here. It's something else.

It really sucks to go out on a limb to give someone your support (a lot of conservatives didn't want Dubya back in 1999), and then have them let you down and sell you out in some particularly shocking way.

Soft of me, perhaps. But as a leftwinger coping with a DLC-infested party, I've been there -- many times.

I think you might be right. I was initially outraged over this (and even fired off an e-mail to the WH), but upon further reflection (and listening to Rush), i think the president knows what he is doing and why he is doing it. He isn't Bill Clinton after all. I think the UAE is helping us more than we know or should know and this could be all part of the fight against terrorism.

The righteous Leader is always right -- even when he is clearly dead wrong, or clearly hasn't got the ghost of a clue. God speaks directly to the Leader, and therefore the overwhelming opposition of the congress and of the people themselves does not matter; somehow, the Leader always knows what is best. The Leader deserves faithful and unquestioning support. Submitting to the Leader's superior judgement frees one from the burden of having to worry over which path is correct for the nation.

And so on.

It's along about there that rightwing politics make the leap toward something that could arguably be called fascism. I hope that the Freepers as a whole decline to make that leap.

147. ...which reminds me of an old joke:
It had been raining for days and days, and a terrible flood had come over the land. The waters rose so high that one man was forced to climb onto the roof of his house.

As the waters rose higher and higher, a man in a rowboat appeared, and told him to get in. "No," replied the man on the roof. "I have faith in the Lord; the Lord will save me." So the man in the rowboat went away. The man on the roof prayed for God to save him.

The waters rose higher and higher, and suddenly a speedboat appeared. "Climb in!" shouted a man in the boat. "No," replied the man on the roof. "I have faith in the Lord; the Lord will save me." So the man in the speedboat went away. The man on the roof prayed for God to save him.

The waters continued to rise. A helicopter appeared and over the loudspeaker, the pilot announced he would lower a rope to the man on the roof. "No," replied the man on the roof. "I have faith in the Lord; the Lord will save me." So the helicopter went away. The man on the roof prayed for God to save him.

The waters rose higher and higher, and eventually they rose so high that the man on the roof was washed away and drowned.

Upon arriving in heaven, the man marched straight up to God. "Heavenly Father," he said, "I had faith in you, I prayed to you to save me, and yet you did nothing. Why?" God gave him a puzzled look, and replied "I sent you two boats and a helicopter. What more did you expect?"

Limbaugh's talking points like a bunch of clones:

"The Democrats don't care about national security! They just want to make political hay by appealing to peoples' racism and xenophobia!"

Like we don't have valid reasons for questioning Lord God Bush's judgment:
- Ignored warnings about Bin Laden and allowed 9-11 to happen on his watch.
- Failed to capture Bin Laden.
- Failed to capture the anthrax terrorist (What's the big deal? Only democrats were targeted).
- They invaded a country with no connection to 9-11.
- Abandoned the mission against the real enemy.
- Ruined the nation's best spy program against the spread of nuclear material.
- Displayed a total inability to deal with crisis during Katrina.

38. Here's a plausible theory...
It seems like every election year (usually on the state level), Republicans "take a stand"
against their unpopular (or leaving office) Republican governor (this time it's the unpopular Republican prez),
they get enough votes to override a threatened veto, and they win points with stupid voters.

I wonder if this Dubai port deal is this year's "threatened veto" issue.

This is all about MONEY, CASH, PETRO-DOLLARS.

"National security" is nothing but a nice electoral slogan they bring about to scare us and tell us they'll protect us.

Then they sell the keys to our ports to countries like UAE that are suspected of involvement in 9/11 and still recognize the Taliban as the gov. of Afghanistan.

You can bet on it: Dick is getting his cut out of this deal.

78. A simple and elegant solution
1. The Democrats should propose legislation to block the sale (too many Republicans will sign on to allow the House and Senate Leadership to block it from a vote).

2. Allow Bush to veto it. If he doesn't, he's a lame-duck wimp for the rest of his term.

3. If he does veto it, demand a vote to overturn the veto. Republicans will then be forced to choose between standing up for the Administration (in which case we accuse them of "threatening our safety") or supporting a bill they probably voted for the first time around.

94. Bush's FIRST VETO is to help a terrorist sponsoring state control US ports
now there is a talking point.

ONLY VETO the president has enacted is to ensure our port security is run by a foriegn arab power that supports and harbors terrorists - in fact one that produced some of the 9/11 hijackers.

I love this talking point.

95. not sure I agree
Hmmm, seems like everyone is really getting worked up about this. Here is my take. First of all, we have a lot of foreign companies running many companies and industries here in the states. And while I'd rather have a US company running the ports (USA! USA!) seems like this company is the only one stepping up. Do we even have companies that reside in the CONUS that can do this? Secondly, everything that moves into, through, and out of the ports is going to fall under the same laws, procedures, red tape, etc that currently exist. (Not that those standards are high enough, but alas they are the current standards) Because of the foreign ownership, I suspect that we will now get very serious about our ports and begin to pass real legislation (overt) and also do more covertly to ensure security. LET ME REPEAT, BECAUSE OF THIS FOREIGN OWNERSHIP WE WILL GET SERIOUS ABOUT PORT SECURITY! And guess what, the foreign company has to comply. I do feel like the unions are up in arms too, these foreign companies certainly will loosen union hiring restrictions if not abolish all together. Which I think is a good thing. I don't want to "hate on" Arabs just for being Arabs. Having spent time in UAE, my take on them is that if we have any friends in the Arab world... they are ones. So relax everyone, this will be a good thing.

102. Ummm...yeah, whatever. This flies in the face everything Bush
supposedly stands for. Where is the "with or against us" rhetoric now? Nowhere when it benefits this administration's pocketbook. As I recall, UAE has numerous terrorist ties and even supported the Taliban until recently. Why are they friendly toward us? When this company is allowed to take control and has access to DHS data, that represents a significant risk toward our port security. That foreign company has to comply on port security, eh? Who's going to enforce that? DHS? They can't seem to do anything these days.

I do not hate on Arabs. I have friends who are muslim. However, I will not relax on something as ridiculous and reckless as this.

131. I THINK IT'S A GOOD IDEA TOO, (for only one reason...)
FINALLY it will get congress to pay attention to the sad financial support of the port security. Only 5% of all containers are inspected. That's a disaster waiting to happen. If it takes this to get their attention then pass it tomorrow. I'm tired of the govt. spending time and money on things that won't matter a damn bit if a nuke goes off in this country. It's time for the govt. to WAKE UP!

212. I mostly agree- but dang this is a good talking point
I mean really his first veto is to let an arab state with ties to 9/11 run the point of entry to the US that has the weakest security?

also if it were a company fine - it is replacing a london based firm after all not a US one, BUT it is a state run company - If we were say Saudi Arabia it would be the difference between having walmart or the US military run our stores.

98. He can pocket veto and the deal will go through
He doesn't have to veto. He can just toss the legislation in the circular file and wait for the deal to be finalized on March 2. Then the legislation will be irrelevant. If they pass a bill outlawing foreign control of port security, then he can veto it.

A question I haven't heard answered: Are we even capable of providing our own port security? It's been done by foreign contractors and sub-contractors for so long, how long would it take for Americans to take over? And why do I get the feeling the company that would take over would be named Halliburton?

the chance of an insider tilting the odds in the favor of our enemies is greater. Remember, the UAE will have control of operations, but the Coast Guard has the duties of securing the ports. I trust the CG because they have an emotional stake in our security, Employees from the Arabian peninsula don't. I'd just feel better if it was Americans running the ports, and not just for security reasons. We need all the good paying jobs we can find.

P&O Agrees to Singapore Acquisition, Dropping Dubai (Update5)
Jan. 26 (Bloomberg) -- Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Co., Britain's largest port operator, agreed to be acquired by Singapore's biggest port company for 3.55 billion pounds ($6.3 billion), rejecting a lower offer from Dubai.

PSA International Pte, owned by Singapore's state investment company Temasek Holdings Pte, bid 470 pence for each share, London- based P&O said in a statement. DP World, the port operator owned by Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, offered 443 pence on Nov. 29.

The fact that this first broke out as a subject of the two minute hate in the Reich Wing propaganda outlets last week indicates that something is in play.

My best guess: When it gets overturned, GOP Congress will point to their 'Independence' from the Man/Monkey administration, thus inoculating themselves from a Democratic attack on Congress role as a 'check and balance' in November.

OTOH, it could simply be as it seems. We have always known this bunch are only exceeded in their treasonous greed by their stupidity. Could it be payoff to the UAE for cooperation in the 'War On A Tactic'?

My bet is still on us being played.

On Edit: Um, can I still change my bet?

170. Think it through and remember
Look at a map of the Gulf. Where is UAE? Its down towards the mouth of the gulf and provides a nice safe unsinkable aircraft carrier within striking distance of the Iranian reactors and nuclear facilities on the south coast. It is also useful for keeping the straights of hormouz (the narrow part at the mouth of the gulf) open.

And remember that US forces are ALREADY based in the UAE.

Check this out about a U2 crash in the UAE last year. All nice and open and pretty wierd...

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/4119344.stm

You dont use U2's to spy on afghanistan. Your already there and no anti-aircraft missile is more than shoulder launched and cant reach more than 10000ft. The same applies for Iraq. You can photograph both of them from normal USAF or USN aircraft at 15000ft+ with normal recon abilities. Or with predator drones.

The U2 flies operationally at 70000ft (thats right SEVEN ZERO). You only need it if you are against serious anti aircraft system threats. Like the Iranian missile defense system.

This deal is the payoff for services rendered so far and future use of the location. And its probably not to do with the "war on terror". Its probably for ongoing and potential upcoming operations against Iran.

179. So basically the Bush Crime Family is stating yet again that
Edited on Tue Feb-21-06 09:30 PM by superconnected
they will continue to run the country mafioso style, looting the treasury, and national assets, and any argument (no matter how intelligent or for the benefit of the country) will be ignored with a flat veto. The bottom line is personal profit and not America.

Of course the subtext in this also shows that he still isn't planning on doing his duty to protect america. He'll stay a hostile warlord who authorizes spying and arrests, if we show dissent.

I figure the deals worth millions to the Bush family personally, as well as the links to his crime ring, or he wouldn't be doing it.

193. Thank you, Mr. President...
...for ensuring that Republicans everywhere can no longer play the "National Security" card against Democrats after you hand over the security of our nation to a country that has done little to curb money laundering, drug trafficking, and terrorist movements within its own borders.

blaming President Bill Clinton for this Long Beach Harbor sale to China, an evil commie country.

These fools try to change the subject by telling other board members to google clinton/long beach/china.

They should really be googling b*/saudi/backdoor deals/syndicate...

Anything * does can be excused by invoking the Clenis defense.

These idiots got suckered into supporting that POS and can't admit it they were used.

Please protect me oh great one!

203. If he would veto such legislation, he would be totally foolish
and going against the wish of about almost all Americans for what? To prove a point he can veto it? I think the Congress vote would be way above his veto power.

207. I think this quote
pretty much sums up the manifesto of this entire 'presidency'

"They ought to listen to what I have to say about this. They'll look at the facts and understand the consequences of what they're going to do. But if they pass a law, I'll deal with it with a veto."

fing scary.

What ARE the facts?
What are the consequences of this deal not going through?

They will look at the facts and understand.
