States going after employers of illegals
http://feeds.bignewsnetwork.com/?sid=58ec4f65fb1b3652

State Democratic lawmakers in the United States are taking aim at businesses that hire undocumented workers.

Iowa's Democratic leaders want the attorney general to investigate companies that hire undocumented workers, and Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano, also a Democrat, is backing a bill to impose big fines on companies that employ illegal immigrants, Stateline.org said Tuesday.

Similar proposals have been discussed in a growing number of states, including Colorado, Indiana, Maryland and New Hampshire, as legislators ratchet up state-based efforts to deal with illegal immigration by pointing their pens at those who hire illegal immigrants, not just at workers.

Good for the democrats...goafter the Companies...

1. Good for them....
No jobs, no folks illegally crossing the border.

I think employers that hire illegals should be fined into bankruptcy and thrown into ass splitting federal prison for a mandatory minimum of 10 years.

Good for Janet on supporting this.

I feel nothing but pity for those coming over here searching for a better life...but the fact is they are nothing but camels to these greedy REPUBLICAN business owners who pay them 2 bucks an hour with zero rights as workers.

It's so easy for these repukes to have it both ways. They hire illegals on one front then on another they tell their drooling masses that they put America first and we should vote to kick the illegals OUT!!

then of course they just hire a different batch from the ever growing pool..

4. Pull their license to do business
That would cost the license of most of the contractors in Southern Arizona. Rarely see a gringo on a construction site here any longer. And before the xenophobe accusations start, IMO imported labor is not much different that exporting jobs. I've worked at some of those jobs citizens won't do, such as, roofing in Tucson for several years, working in a packing house and on a SP steel gang. Citizens will do the work if paid a decent wage.

5. I wish they'd do that in Georgia.
Here, illegals work in the chicken processing plants, yard services, construction....the local economy is pretty much built on their backs. Business loves them, so they're probably here to stay unless threatened by something like big fines.

6. SC is a lot like that, as far as chicken processing plants,
construction, and road work goes.

My uncle said once if they all disappeared, nothing would get done.

7. your uncle is wrong
Meatpacking, construction, roadwork: all jobs that American workers used to do perfectly well.

And will again, once we've solved our border security problem and got the traitors out of office.

8. My guess is the employers are paying them a lot less than
they would American workers. I know they do in construction.

10. American workers...
...want things like a living wage, benefits, & overtime pay, all of which cost business big $$$$. Illegals will work for a pittance.

Follow the money.

15. I just sent an email to Sonny asking him to join the other Governors.
I sent him a copy of the UPI article, and explained how employers were exploiting these illegals, and the sure cure is to go after the employers. "It's amazing how powerful the threat of jail time is to business owners!

I doubt he'll pay much attention to MY email, but if he receives a lot more like it, just maybe it will get his ear!

11. We just had a major push on this in Missouri
to the point where a local construction company had some of their upper management go to job sites to check immigration status of workers. Their comments were "It may not be pretty, but Im not putting my butt on the line and risking the company if we have any illegals working here". Finally - this is how it should be done. Make the companies police themselves by making it in their best interest to do so.

16. About effing time!
When I was back in North Carolina at Christmas I was staying with my very Red family, who all live in a rural area known mostly for the farming of Christmas trees. Most of the farms employ a good number of illegal to do the actual work. I cannot TELL you how many times I heard people there complaining about the drain on the county's resources and I even heard one man talking about a friend of his who owns one of the tree farms:

"He has to take them to the bank every friday and pay them in cash because they don't have accounts. It's nice of him to do that for them, they don't deserve even that. He pays them too much anyway."

At which point my head exploded. I really fail to see how people can't put 2 and 2 together. It's not like people came up to work in the tree farms because it's such a glamorous area that offers tons of opportunities for their families in the middle of nowhere. There's a very large system for advertising these kinds of jobs, and even in some cases (as with ConAgra and the fish-plant cabals) transporting them up here.

But, deal with unscrupulous business practices? Perish the thought. I'm so glad to see these Dems putting their spotlight on the right places.

17. Sounds like a good first step
However unless private citizens can bring charges on behalf of the state, I don't see such laws as perticualry effective. And possibly a provision where the state will sponsor an undocumented immigrant for citizenship if the immigrant turns over their employer.

18. As an interesting aside on this issue
I'm in the Central San Joaquin Valley in CA. Last night there was a feature on the local news regarding how farmers were having a difficult time finding enough "guest workers" to pick the crops due to the fact that they are being lured to construction jobs to places like New Orleans. Apparently, the construction jobs are paying upwards of $30.00 an hour and the farm labor jobs are paying about $10.50 an hour. I notice California was not one of the states listed in the article. I'm wondering if they would dare to fine the farmers here. Something tells me, no.
