Reform bill could 'sweep away parliamentary debate'
Edited on Wed Feb-22-06 08:23 AM by Voice1
From the Guardian today:
Sorry, I forgot to include the link, here it is:
http://politics.guardian.co.uk/constitution/story/0,,1715467,00.html

The Conservatives and senior legal experts today joined forces to attack a new government bill they fear will give ministers sweeping powers to amend or even introduce new laws without sufficient scrutiny from MPs.
......
And a group of Cambridge University lawyers, led by professor John Spencer QC, has warned that the bill could potentially allow ministers to rewrite virtually any act of parliament, permitting them, for example, to abolish jury trial, put people under house arrest, rewrite immigration law or sack judges.

3. Totalitarianism is spreading across the world, unfortunately

Our leaders are heading us on the road to fascism. Any other Brits concerned should write to their MP www.writetothem.com

6. I never thought I'd see the day where the House of Lords
Edited on Wed Feb-22-06 09:01 AM by Benhurst
would be the last defense against a fascist "New" Labour Party. I hope this can be stopped in the House of Commons; but, if not, surely the House of Lords won't go along.

7. Indeed, the Lords must be commended
Edited on Wed Feb-22-06 09:06 AM by Voice1
On a few issues now, the Lords have really put a stop to Blair & Cos totalitarian schemes. The ID card scam still hasn't been passed yet either, and I very much hope that the Lords won't back down on this issue.

I used to be in favour of Lords reform, but at the moment, I think they're really proving their worth at providing a check to the Blair dominated commons.

8.  You're surprised?
It's not like this administration has any real commitment to democracy... Take a look at their reaction to the Hamas election. Cries of "Democracy" are only a cover for overthrowing governments that they don't like.

If they like you, they'll even sell you nerve gas to use against your own people -- like his papa did when Saddamn was in their good books.

A lot of DUers would like your website methinks

You can always install it in your signature line if you like

My EYES at the bottom of this post take you to one of my websites,

OH

and I'll post from your website to "tease" some of the other DUers to take a peek at your site . .

"Why to fight for someone else's rights

When they came for the Semites¹ I said nothing for I did not know them.
When they came for the Gypsys, I said nothing, for I was not a Gypsy.
When they came for the Communists, I was solaced by my safety.
When they came for the Gays, I clung to my wife.
When they came for the Labour Organizers, I hid in my business.
When they came for the Rights organizers, I was glad I had been silent.
When they came for my wife, I cowered in the corner.
When they came for me, there was nobody left to fight for my rights.

-- My paraphrase of an earlier poem.

¹ semites =~ Hebrews&Arabs "

13. Thanks..
I've actually become somewhat blind to my own website.. I just went back and actually <i>looked at it</I> for the first time in a while. May I suggest "Remembrance"? http://www.bcgreen.com/comments/2004/remembrance.html

The other one you might have a harder time wrapping your brain around would be "On Iran and Khomeini". http://www.bcgreen.com/comments/on-iran.html

14. Already read that one on Iran and the Shaw . . Thanks!
.
.
.

sorry to say

no surprises there

I know our southern neighbors foreign policy all too well

and for HTML the < and the > don't work - it's the square parentheses to the right of the "p" on your keyboard

And after you snoop around a bit and get the "feel" of DU, you might consider adding a link at your website to Democratic Underground? - ??

just a thot . .

Just look at how well we're doing without it.
