Rendell says port may not renew lease of Philadelphia terminal
Feb. 22, 2006

PHILADELPHIA - Gov. Ed Rendell says the commonwealth may take steps of its own to ensure port security in light of a deal allowing a company owned by the United Arab Emirates to manage ports in six U.S. cities, including one of the seven terminals in Philadelphia.

If the deal goes through and his concerns are not addressed, Rendell said, the lease on the terminal in question may not be renewed. Reps. Curt Weldon, R-Pa., and Robert Brady, D-Pa., meanwhile, said they were working on legislation to give Congress a role in such decisions.

Rendell said after an unrelated appearance at the National Constitution Center that the company's lease is up in May and the port authority could rebid the contract. "We can just not renew the lease," Rendell said.

Rendell can be a populist governor when he wants to. Clever guy to propose this.
