Saudis Reject U.S. Plan to Isolate Hamas (another Condi smackdown)

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia - Saudi Arabia on Wednesday became the second Arab ally in as many days to reject the U.S. strategy of financially isolating Hamas if the militant group does not moderate its policies as leader of the Palestinians.

As Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice sat nearby, Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal said through a translator, "We wish not to link financial assistance to the Palestinian people to issues other than their dire humanitarian needs."

A day earlier, Rice had stood by as Saud's Egyptian counterpart said it was premature to cut off aid to a Hamas-led government.

Saud and Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit said the world should not "prejudge" Hamas, whose sweep in Palestinian elections last month stunned Washington and threw the Israeli-Palestinian peace process into new turmoil.

Earlier Wednesday, Rice pledged to a group of Egyptian democracy activists in Cairo that the United States would continue applying pressure on Egypt's government to meet its promises of reform.

Recently, the right-wingers have been all over Gore for his comments in Saudi Arabia about US treatment of Arabs. They've said he should be prosecuted for treason. Well, didn't Condi do the same thing when she told the Egyptians that black people in the South were denied the vote in the US until the 1960s and the passage of the Voting Rights Act (which her own party now does not want to renew when it expires).

The point is, she criticized the United States while abroad. According to the right-wingers, this amounts to teason. So where is the outrage on the right? Is Condi a traitor or not? Why the double standard?

Condi does it again on behalf of the corrupt Bush administration.

I hold no brief for Hamas, but in the past they've resorted to violence I'm guessing because they felt they had no other effective avenue for expression. Now, they're in control in Palestine. They have something to lose. They have something to gain by acting responsibly. Hamas could be rehabilitated as a political movement.

Unless . . .

Unless we continue to punish them for what they've done in the past, ramp up repression, withhold or take back funds the Palestinians need to improve their lot and assist them on the road to self-governance. Clearly many of the Palestinian people see Hamas as a legitimate political voice. In fact, a plurality see Hamas that way. The surest way to defeat the goal of democracy is to ignore or suppress the will of the people. And there we are again: The only tool this corrupt administration knows how to use is the hammer, and every problem looks like a nail.
