WASHINGTON -- Democrats and Republicans in Nevada's congressional delegation are united in their opposition to the sale of shipping operations at six major U.S. seaports to a company in the United Arab Emirates without further review.
Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid of Nevada said he is glad Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., has announced plans to introduce legislation to block the sale until it can be more closely examined.
But Frist made his statement before President Bush issued a veto threat against any bill that would delay the sale.
"While I appreciate Senator Frist's statement that further review is necessary, it is already clear this deal should not go forward and I hope he will permit the Senate to act expeditiously in this matter when the Congress returns next week," Reid said in a statement.
Sen. John Ensign, R-Nev., said the security of American ports is too important for their operation to be turned over to a United Arab Emirates company without a comprehensive review.
