Bush 'willing to accept' delay in Dubai deal
Bush 'willing to accept' delay in Dubai deal
By Stephanie Kirchgaessner and Holly Yeager in Washington

The Bush administration on Thursday signalled that it would be willing to give lawmakers more time to review Dubai Ports World's controversial takeover of US terminals following an intense backlash against the deal in Congress.

National security concerns raised by lawmakers, including Republican leaders in the House and Senate, were "entirely appropriate", Karl Rove, adviser to President George W Bush, said. It was important that "members of Congress have the time to get fully briefed on this".

"There are some regulatory hurdles that this still needs to go through on the British side as well that are going to be concluded next week. There's no requirement that it close...immediately after that," Mr Rove told Fox News...

17. it is Hil. Clinton who is in his face on this (looky)--and i heard her
saying this to reporters after the Senate briefing today.

....It is far from clear, however, whether lawmakers in Congress - particularly Democrats - will be satisfied with Mr Rove's offer. Mr Rove defended the UAE, and the approval process, saying: "It's not the company that's in charge ofsecurity, it's the United States' government that's in charge of security."

Senator Hillary Clinton, the Democrat from New York, said legislation would be proposed on Monday that had support from Republicans and that would formally delay the deal and force the administration to re-open its investigation.

Republican Senator John Warner agreed with some issues Mrs Clinton raised at a hearing - including legal questions about whether the administration was required to review the deal for 45-days because DP World is state-owned and the deal could affect national security - but said he believed a resolution between the White House and Congress could be found.

22. Let me translate this for you all....
"Well, we screwed up. We are truly incompetent and can't even make domestic decisions without potentially inflaming the Arab world or insulting other lawmakers even in our own party. We still have not learned to consider any other options beyond what our most optimistic fantasies are. Someday, God willing, this administration will begin to understand that there are actually other people in the world besides those who work in the West Wing, and that yes, they are actually real people out there. However, at this rate, we will be learning that lesson behind bars."

47. Yep.
Something might get put on "hold," like renewal of the Patriot Act, but he eventually gets what he wants. And when Congress DOES stand up to him - as with torture - he issues a "signing statement" saying he has the "right" to do it anyway.

I really would like to understand how this is working - how we got to the point where these criminals have such total and complete control without ANY opposition whatsoever.

That is exactly what these guys are gonna do here. They're gonna sneak it through somehow.

37. A sinister thought .... comments please ...
It occurred to me yesterday that among the pieces of evidence we've heard is the involvement of UAE folk with Osama Bin Laden before 9/11, and how they've changed their tune since. That may or may not be, I haven't been able to research yet, but--and this one is something not getting great attention--this sheds new light on the attacks on the Clinton admin during the 2004 campaign by Republicans who charge Clinton "failed to get Bin Laden when he had the chance."

Several chances were in late 1998 and early 1999 when Osama was on a hunting trip. It just so happens that he was spending time during that hunting trip with a few of the Emirates, and the fear of blowing them up by mistake is what kept Clinton from pulling the trigger. (more background in my blog post)

Am I totally off base? A lengthy post today on Kos sheds light on the possible links between the Bush family, the Carlyle Group and the UAE. It appears to me we've got a handful of puzzle pieces, but we don't yet know how to assemble them--maybe we're only seeing one tentacle of the octopus? This could lead nowhere, I will admit; but it could also lead in many directions we haven't yet identified.

One example: Suppose the Emirates were compensated for BEING at that hunting ground where Osama was, because certain powers did not want Osama to BE "gotten" at that time. Maybe they knew that at a later date, they'd want to criticize the Democratic president for being "soft" on terrorism and not getting Osama during his term in office. (For sake of argument I don't want to get into a premeditated 9/11 scenario, so let's just say that his 1990s efforts and the USS Cole would have been enough to criticize the Democrat for not acting upon.)

I'm struggling because I don't know where to drive the train next. But the more this grows, the worse it smells.
