Iran least popular country in U.S.
The annual Gallup poll on U.S. views of other countries finds Canada is the most-favored nation while Iran is the most hated.

Eighty-nine percent of those surveyed had a favorable view of Canada, while 88 percent like Britain best. Japan clocked in at 81 percent and Germany -- which has risen considerably as memories fade of its refusal to back the Iraqi invasion -- had a 79 percent favorable rating.

The other countries with more supporters than detractors were Israel (68 percent), Taiwan (67 percent), the Philippines (67 percent), India (66 percent), Mexico (64 percent), Egypt (58 percent), Russia (54 percent) and France (54 percent). China was in a class by itself, with 44 percent having a favorable opinion and 49 percent a negative one.

Moving down the list, only 31 percent had a positive view of Saudi Arabia while 62 percent had a negative one. It was followed by Pakistan (30 percent), Afghanistan (27 percent), Libya (22 percent), Iraq and Cuba (21 percent), the Palestinian Authority (11 percent), North Korea (10 percent) and Iran (7 percent).

2. You must be too young to remember the 400 hostages and 200
plus marines that were killed.

9. I doubt the regular American joe

remembers about that. Are you refering to the bombing of the embassy in Lebanon in which Iran might have been involved ? That was like in 1983.

19. What 200 marines killed? I believe that was Lebanon.
Edited on Fri Feb-24-06 06:42 AM by Ben Ceremos
As for the hostages, wasn't it 444 days and not 400 hostages (actually 52)? And, I must add, it seems you forget the ruin of Iran through imposition of playboy western values, development of a vicious repression force (Savak) and Washington-dictated policies. Selective memory is a treacherous thing.
Americans have a simple ability to switch their loyalties and their hatred as surely as a citizen of Orwell's famous tale.

The Shah's very annoying tendency to neutralize every political opponents while the fundamentalists were mostly left alone, setting the stage for what we have today, ie: a "reason" to go to war.

3. As a Cold War child, I find one number astounding myself
>Russia (54 percent) and France (54 percent).

We like the Russians as much as we do the French. Am I the only one stunned by this one?

To be annoyingly accurate, Canada and the UK were a statistical tie. The curve toward Canada was fractional at best. Still, the numbers are much better than the last time such a survey was taken. It's good to see our paranoia is abating.

4. France suprisingly has been our closest ally
in dealing with Syria after the assissination in Lebanon and it has been even more hawkish on Iran then the UK has been. The US public has noticed to a certain degree.

5. A few years ago Iraq would have topped the list.
I see some pukes still have their panties in a twist over France.

Look at this lame shit:

-Germany -- which has risen considerably as memories fade of its refusal to back the Iraqi invasion -- had a 79 percent favorable rating.--

Did these idiots rename German foods?

Ban German beer?

25. Iran the country-yes, Iran, the gov.-no
I have lived there, and still have relatives there. It is a starkly beautiful, ancient country, and in general, the people are kind. It is not on my shit list, only the assbite leaders thereof. Iran is not a threat to world peace, the US is.

28. Thats a good distinction
I looked at the Gallop web site (I had to register) the question was do you see Iran as Very favorable (1%), Mostly favorable(6%), Mostly unfavorable(40%), Very unfavorable(46%). Its high point (since 1989) has been 17% favorable.

I guess, personally, even taking into account the kind people there and its culture, it still would rank near the bottom of my favorable list. (mind you, North Korea, Zimbabwe and Saudi Arabia are no prizes either)

27. in other news
only twenty percent of Americans can find Iran on a map. only 18% can name the capital of Iran. only ten percent can tell you what language is spoken in Iran (hint, it ain't Arabic) and only 5% can name a single agricultural product of Iran.

in other words, we don't know shit about them, and we still hate them, good times.

This Gallup poll is more evidence of the tremendous ignorance and confusion of the American people on any topic involving the international scene. No wonder we elect morons like Bush for he represents the darkest impulses in the American psychic.
