Tenn. Halts Immigrant Driving Certificates
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060224/ap_on_re_us/immigrant_drivers

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Tennessee stopped issuing driving certificates to illegal immigrants Friday after investigations found they were being shuttled from other states, using fake residency papers and sometimes bribing state workers to get the cards.

Safety Commissioner Jerry Nicely said the program was being suspended while his department and state investigators reassess it "to ensure we're doing what's best for Tennesseans."

The certificates, which are stamped "not valid for identification," were meant to improve driving safety by making sure immigrants living in the state knew traffic rules. Recent federal investigations found that illegal immigrants were traveling hundreds of miles from other states to get the certificates illegally.

So how are these people supposed to drive to work to feed their families?

2. Criminalizing is the answer to everything these days
Of course immigrants will continue to drive, they don't really have a whole lot of choice in the matter. Barring them from having licenses will simply ensure that they do so illegally so we can get all pissed off at them when we catch them and accuse them of breaking the law. I can't wait until we solve the Social Security crisis by criminalizing aging.

3. Do they think that will stop them from driving?
Many of these people would cross the border illegally to work, so I don't think a drivers license is going to stop them from driving.

Didn't California talk about this a few years back but determined it was better to license them and know where they were?

5. Do you really think giving them a license to drive is good?
I would say 90% can not even read road signs....besides that these immigrants are not just looking for work or working they are smuggling in large amounts of meth....We have a large number in our area...The taxpayers footing the bill for their medical needs...a lot of them get food stamps...inturperters are hired for our schools and courts...I could go on and on...

8. Smuggling meth? I was under the impression...
that most meth is made locally from ingredients pretty readily available in a pharmacy. Where are they smuggling meth in from and to?

Not flaming. Just asking for more info...

11. and I'm glad I'm going away for the weekend

and won't be able to give in to temptation and thus waste any more time reading things like that.

I had a point. If someone responds to a post I have written, I expect to see my point addressed, silly as I know that is, and oft as my expectations are dashed. When I see commentary about myself, I laugh and laugh. But I really do have better things to do.

6. This may have been meant to stop illegal immigration but
it is not going to work. As I understand it many illegal workers are transported by those who go between them and the employer. This law will merely make them more dependent on dishonest go-betweens.
