77. Did he play a Mr. Nervous type on Steve Allen? I have a vague
recollection. And Louis Nye -- I can't remember his gig, but "Steverino" was the word that sticks. And Tom Poston? What type was he? Have great childhood memories of my folks laughing out loud to those three, not to mention Steve Allen's other hilarious bits.

.

Oh, wow . . . Don Knotts. The comics' comic! I remember him well from the beginning of his television career on the original Steve Allen Show to Andy Griffin's show to Three's Company. Knotts held his own and carved himself a wonderful and warm position in the hearts of America!

"Early in his TV career, he was one of the original cast members of "The Steve Allen Show," the comedy-variety show that ran from 1956-61. He was one of a group of memorable comics backing Allen that included Louis Nye, Tom Poston and Bill "Jose Jimenez" Dana. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060225/ap_on_en_tv/obit_knotts

RIP, Don Knotts as Deputy Barney Fife in The Andy Griffith Show

the quintessential Don Knots movie (I still remember the theme oddly enough). The world really needs kinder gentler people. It's odd, my daughter and I put on a Andy Griffith DVD last week and enjoyed it tremendously. There are a few small town around like that, but that gentle way of life is disappearing. I'll have to get my Mayberry Cookbook out and do a Memorial Theme dinner. I notice most of the older Hollywood types are DEM's and liberal ones at that. Even some like Johnny Carson. Must have been all that McCarthyism and black listing.

Wasn't he also in the Apple Dumpling Gang with Tim Conway...Not that was another great combination.

23. We Love Barney Fife

Andy Griffith on TV,
Sheriff Taylor
Mayberry,
Mount Pilot,
North Carolina,
Raleigh

Fishin' hole,
Earnest T.,
Courthouse,
Opie,
Goober Pyle,
Gomer Pyle, (Golllllly!)

Aunt Bea in the kitchen,
Lousy pickles,
Good friend chicken,
Helen Crump,
Otis drunk,
Emmett's Fixit Shop

Criminals would come to town,
Fearless Fife tracks 'em down,
His eye would pop,
His gun would drop,
He's a favorite TV cop

We love Barney Fife...
He's the Deputy of Mayberry
We love Barney Fife...
He upholds the law with Opie's pa

Floyd the barber cuttin' hair,
Howard Sprague,
Barber chair,
Barney's job is never done,
Law and order's in his blood,
His shaky gun is at your service,
Catchin' crooks makes him nervous,
Thelma Lou's offical stud,
Nip it
Nip it in the bud
(This is Deputy Fife speakin'
And I'm armed!!!)

Andy plays the guitar,
Barney's in the squad car,
Driving Mayberry nuts,
He's law enforcement klutz

Ticket writing everyone,
He's got one bullet for his gun,
Bad guys are on the run,
Book 'em Barney
Murder one!

We love Barney Fife...
He's the Deputy of Mayberry...
Andy Griffith is our life
(Yeah yeah yeah),
When the show is done
We'll watch another one
(Re-run, re-run, re-run)
WE LOVE BARNEY FIFE!

28. My heart is broken tonight. The greatest Second Banana in TV history.
I have always strived to be as gentle and sincere as Barney Fife, as portrayed by Don Knotts. One of those Boomer icons that should have lived forever. More later. Too heartbroken to say more. Even the fun girls from Mt. Pilot are ratcheting it down a notch today. He was the greatest. Screw that Furley character. He was Bernard P. Fife.

44. Me too...

I'm really kinda freaked out about it.

I got the first four seasons of the Andy Griffith Show for Christmas and was watching one of the discs earlier today, and I actually thought to myself that it was comforting thinking that while I knew these people couldn't be around forever, at least I'd have this record of them being here.

And just now I logged on to DU and saw this, and my heart ran cold. I'm actually nearing tears, which is really weird to me.

I need to find a copy of _No Time for Sergeants_. Don had a small part, but it was brilliant.

Damnit this sucks.

42. The Nervous Man on the Steve Allen Show
I sure remember Don Knotts in his big tv debut on the Steve Allen Show when I was a youngun. I too will miss this fine entertaining actor.

http://www.answers.com/topic/don-knotts

Name at birth: Jesse Donald Knotts

Pop-eyed and pencil-necked, Don Knotts made a career out of playing jittery underdogs with wavering voices and big dreams. Knotts was a regular on the original Tonight Show with Steve Allen, where he broke in an ongoing routine called simply the Nervous Man.

57. He always had some great "study hints" for Opie.
I liked his way of memorizing that the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776.

You just remember "1", because that's the first number.
You remember "7", because that's like "lucky seven".
Then you remember "7" again, because you already just remembered it.
Then you remember "6", because 7 minus 1 are 6.

And that's 1776!

70. The very first thing my family watched on our brand-new
console color television set (I believe it was 1965) was "The Incredible Mr. Limpet".

RIP to a fine man.

73. I met him once
He was at a fundraiser for our local Catholic Charities, a Mardi Gras event. I played black jack with fake money next to him. He was a quiet, pleasant, gentleman.

Rest in peace Mr. Knotts.
