'Riot' at notorious Afghan jail
25 February 2006

Inmates at Afghanistan's main high security Pul-e-Charkhi jail in Kabul have rioted, prison officials say.

Hundreds of prisoners are barricaded inside one wing of the jail, parts of which are on fire, the authorities say.

Gunfire has been heard coming from the jail. Trouble apparently started after a change in prison uniform rules.

Police have sealed off the affected wing and no-one has escaped, jail officials say. Interior Ministry reinforcements have been sent in.

2. Is there any part of the muslim world that is not a total mess right now?
The Phillipines is falling apart. Saudi Arabia may be in trouble. Egypt's dictatorship is aging fast and is barricading itself against its own islamic fundamentalists. Iraq - nuff said. Hamas has taken over from the corrupt dottering PLO. Lebanon has been destabilized (way to go bushco!) Pakistan is rioting over bad cartoons, that dictatorship could vanish in the blink of an eye. Nigeria is rioting - christian against muslim. Iran trots out its idiot president for his weekly inflammatory statement. Yemen releases its entire crop of al qaeda prisoners. Yes indeed, we have done wonders bringing all that neocon freemon'n'moxy to the world.

Police and soldiers surrounded the Policharki Prison on Sunday as government officials attempted to negotiate with the inmates, who include al-Qaida and Taliban militants.

An Associated Press reporter heard two bursts of gunfire about two hours apart from inside the prison Sunday. A few minutes after the first gunfire, an ambulance carrying an unidentified patient drove out of the prison.

5. Afghan prisoners seize jail wing
26 February 2006

Inmates have taken control of a wing of Afghanistan's main high-security jail, Pul-e-Charkhi in Kabul, officials say.

Sources have told the BBC four inmates have been killed, although top Afghan officials have denied any deaths.

The violence apparently began as an escape attempt in a section holding both Taleban and al-Qaeda militants as well as ordinary criminals.

Hundreds of prisoners are barricaded inside a women's wing of the jail, parts of which are on fire.

Republican Congressmen say they never had it so good. Their meals are gourmet and their accommodations are way better than the caves they are used to. I bet Republicans are totally baffled why anyone would try to escape from their new found paradise. We all know it certainly could not be that they want to be "Free" cause we all know how much "They Hate Us for our Freedoms" so they could not possibly want such Freedom for themselves. Really a stumper for them I am sure.

12. Inmates riot in Afghanistan prison
At least 7 killed, prison officials say
http://edition.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/asiapcf/02/26/afghan.riot/

KABUL, Afghanistan (CNN) -- Afghan police and soldiers surrounded the nation's highest security prison after an uprising broke out in three sections containing hundreds of inmates.

snip

The sections involved included the women's block housing about 500, the political prisoners block containing as many as 900, and a criminal block housing about 700. Combined, about 2,000 prisoners are in the three blocks.

The inmates were chanting various slogans, including "God is Great," "Death to America" and "Down with Karzai," a reference to Afghan President Hamid Karzai.
snip
In August 2004, a U.N. inspection of the prison that called for the release of 725 Taliban prisoners inside said the conditions "violate every standard of human rights."

The official line is that the prisoners objected to new uniforms (several inmates had escaped lately)

But what I found amazing is that they have 500 women in the prison there! Wow!
