Anger over governor's no-show at funeral

SACRAMENTO - Law enforcement unions attacked Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Friday for skipping the Modesto funeral held for fallen California Highway Patrol Officer Earl Scott.

The unions, who opposed the Republican governor during last year's special election campaign, accused Schwarzenegger of missing Thursday's funeral to attend a Phoenix political fundraiser for U.S. Sen. John Kyl, R-Ariz.

At the time of the 2 p.m. funeral, Schwarzenegger was in San Diego after a late-morning press conference at San Diego City College to promote community college funding and his infrastructure bond plan. Earlier in the day, Schwarzenegger was in Los Angeles to address an identity-theft summit.

He left the state at 3:35 p.m. and returned to California nearly four hours later, according to press releases issued Thursday by the governor's office. Marty Wilson, Schwarzenegger's chief political fundraiser, confirmed that the governor attended the Kyl event in Arizona.

''He had a long-standing commitment,'' Wilson said.

Schwarzenegger spokesman Vince Sollitto said the governor has attended funerals for fallen CHP officers in the past, including one in November in Roseville for Andy Stevens. The governor spoke to Scott's father Wednesday night and sent an e-mail to all CHP employees to thank them for their service.

Arnie's off to a great start. Pissing of our Highway Patrol isn't going to win any friends.

Just when you think you can't be surprised by any new actions the repugs take...

Let them remember this, along with everything else, when the Gropenfuher runs for reelection.

On edit: Change "Gropenator" to "Gropenfuhrer" -- much more appropriate! Thanks, chimpsrsmarter! :D
