White House welcomes review of Dubai ports deal


WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Bush administration on Monday welcomed a proposal by an Arab company for an additional 45-day review of its contested takeover of terminal operations at six major U.S. ports as a reasonable compromise.

Dubai Ports World had said it was seeking further review in order to allay U.S. lawmakers' national security concerns about handing management of the port terminals to a company owned by the government of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.

"This is a reasonable middle ground that has been reached," White House spokesman Scott McClellan said after behind-the-scenes negotiations involving the Bush administration, the company and members of the U.S. Congress.

McClellan did not repeat U.S. President George W. Bush's threat to veto any legislation that seeks to derail the deal, but said the president's previous position had not changed.

I become cautious. This is usually a sign that they're plotting.

Fact of the matter is, there's obviously something more that Bush is getting out of this, or he wouldn't be so firm on such a politically damaging issue. He wants it, and he'll find a way to hammer it through regardless of public opinion.
