John Conyers will be honored with Humanitarian Award
Kimberly Hayes Taylor / The Detroit News

Like many before him, Congressman John Conyers Jr. has been called a drum major for peace and a warrior for justice and equality.

During 42 years and 19 terms in the U.S. House of Representatives, Conyers has made waves in Washington fighting for health care and higher wages, and working for his constituents in Metro Detroit.

After meeting the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., he decided to emulate the civil rights leader. He won his first congressional term in 1964.

For his commitment to justice, Conyers will be presented with the Soul and Spirit Humanitarian Award today at the 19th annual Damon J. Keith Soul Food Luncheon at the Theodore Levin U.S. Courthouse in Detroit.

4. I was so happy when I saw this in the paper today
I hope it helps him to be named one of the Michiganians of the Year. I nominated him for that one for the second time this year. He didn't get it last year -- the winners are announced in May.

Congressman Conyers Honored

I just wanted to pass along a story from the Detroit News about a humanitarian award bestowed upon Congressman Conyers this afternoon.

A couple other interesting stories today include a Buffalo News article picking up the call for impeachment. AP is also covering our call for an special counsel investigation into the NSA wireless wiretap issue.

And lastly, the Harpers Magazine cover story article, The Case for Impeachment, is now online.

17. Congratulations John ;-)
:applause: :applause: and a :woohoo:

Here's the link to the Harpers article. It's an essay written by none other than Lewis H. Lapham. He does a great job in outlining Conyers article of impeachment.

5. He's one of a few that I can count on one hand that represent the people
in congress. Props to JC for his seemingly tireless and rare integrity.

6. Admire him greatly
I have so much respect for him.

Wish he would be a candidate for President...or a VP running with Edwards.

Congratulations, Mr. Conyers
You are a true American for Democracy :patriot:

9. Please explain how he can fo the most good staying where he is now?
And why would he not have what it takes to be, at the least, a VP?

Honestly...I really want to know.

11. There are probably many reasons, but number one is, he's
Edited on Mon Feb-27-06 08:44 PM by SharonRB
not interested. And, number two, he's 76 years old. Not that I don't think someone his age could handle the job, but I just don't think he'd be right.

I just don't understand why everytime we have someone who does a great job, as JC does, so many people on DU automatically think they should run for president or VP. We need good people throughout the government, not just at the top.

I also don't think he could win a presidential election. He's revered around here (including by me), but in the population in general, he wouldn't do well.

14. Who here knows about the John Conyers group?
When I was active in DU I did my best to keep it going. Just paid a visit there, nobody has posted since January.

Take a look and breath some life back into it.

15. Needless to say, very well deserved indeed
He is a true American patriot in every sense of the word.

He loves his country, and because he does, he's determined to help change it and make America the country that he knows it should and could be.

Congressman Conyers, I stand on the shoulders of people like you!

Whatta man!

23. Thanks, Pats
:hi:

There was another pic of him in the paper today with his award -- a crystal bowl -- and an article about the event. There were about 500 people there at the luncheon yesterday.
