U.S. soldier killed, two wounded, in Afghan clash

KABUL, Feb 28 (Reuters) - A U.S. soldier was killed and two wounded on Tuesday in a clash with insurgents in Afghanistan's central province of Uruzgan in which seven suspected Taliban guerrillas were captured, the U.S. military said.

A military statement said a vehicle from the U.S.-led force fighting the insurgency was damaged by an improvised explosive device during the engagement in the vicinity of the province's Tarin Kot district.

It said U.S. forces responded with small-arms fire.

...

"We are deeply saddened by the loss of one of our fellow service members," the statement quoted said U.S. Task Force commander Major-General Benjamin C. Freakley as saying.
