Childbirth in Afghanistan like Russian roulette
http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/ISL26044.htm

BAHARAK, Afghanistan, Nov 12 (Reuters) - For the women of northeastern Afghanistan, giving birth is something like playing Russian roulette. For every 15 babies born, one mother will die.

To make matters worse, most women will gamble their lives over and over again on the chance of bearing children.

The latest contender, 20-year-old Rooma, bleeds profusely after giving birth to a baby boy in a bare village clinic in the country's remote and mountainous province of Badakshan.

"She was in labour for three days," said her sister Kimya. "But we live in a remote place which is far away in the mountains, and it took us that long to find a taxi to come here."

1. Afghaniwhat???? where is that? we are now in Iraq....forgedaboudit!
makes me sick to my stomach that we have once again abonded Afghanistan in order to invade Iraq..with all its oil riches...

The neocons saw our anger abating...because we 'took out the bad guys'...and we had not yet invaded Iraq...so they abandoned Afghanistan in order to invade IRAQ.....

2. Childbirth has always been dangerous for all women
the facts of this article show how dangerous child bearing really is without the benefit of modern medicine.

Its like stepping back in time, a very unfortunate time.

4. Dammit, reading this makes me so mad
We bomb this nation to pieces thinking it will end the taliban and terrorism.
We throw the seeds of democracy on burning ground, hoping the seeds will take root, and then we abandon the country.
We've got to do something about this...bombing the crap out of Iraq isn't the answer, we needed to do more in Afghanistan first :(

5. Yes, I am certain that the women in Afghanistan........
make all the choices.....about insisting on having babies or not....

Uh, I think the men impregnate them over and over again -- regardless of the gamble to the womens' lives.
