WP: Skepticism About U.S. Deep, Iraq Poll Shows
Motive for Invasion Is Focus of Doubts

By Walter Pincus

More than half of Baghdad's residents said they did not believe the United States would allow the Iraqi people to fashion their political future without the direct influence of Washington, according to a Gallup poll.

With the Bush administration holding consultations on the future of the U.S.-appointed Iraqi Governing Council, recent analyses of the poll data, which were gathered three months ago, highlight the roots within that city's populace of many of the concerns the U.S.-led coalition now faces there.

Only 5 percent of those polled said they believed the United States invaded Iraq "to assist the Iraqi people," and only 1 percent believed it was to establish democracy there.

(snip)

Forty-three percent of the respondents said they believed that U.S. and British forces invaded in March primarily "to rob Iraq's oil." While 37 percent believed the United States acted to get rid of the Hussein regime, only 5 percent thought it did so "to assist the Iraq people," the poll found.

3. The Iraqi people have it absolutely right
which doesn't surprise me. They, even more than us, can recognize a scam when they see it, they survived one for many years, they will survive and defeat this one too.

4. The Iraqis are finally given an opinion

Of course Rummy will disregard this stating it was only the folks in Baghdad that were surveyed. There are people "to the north, south, east, west, somewhere in the general vicinity" that love us.

Thought this was interesting, "Four percent believed the purpose was to destroy weapons of mass destruction, the primary reason given by the Bush administration."
You can fool some of the people...

on edit - they must get their news from Faux

7. Well stick a fork in this war--it's all over but our surrender
I remember Congressmen such as McCain and a few others, back around July, saying that we could still turn things around in Iraq, but we had to do it quickly, that there was only a small window to do it, that otherwise the situation would be beyond our control.

BTW, is the administration, on any level, trying to say that we are making "good progress" now? The CIA says things are going to get a lot worse (leaked by a senior administration official--another sign that the Pit is rotting from the inside out). Bremer has had his butt hauled out of Iraq to answer to the Axis of Evil (Cheney, Rumsfeld, Powell, Tenet). Something's afoot (love that Holmesian word), it's not yet clear what, but I don't think in any stretch of the imagination even the most psychotic wingnut partisan could say the US is in control of events.

Plus, did you-all see that report that there were estimates of from 20,000 to 55,000 Iraqis killed by US forces in Bush War II.

Georgie's job #1 now has to be to put a veneer on this disaster so that he can pretend it shows him in a good light--at least until next November. I hope he gets all the luck in accomplishing it that he deserves.
