Bush's £5 million policing bill
Press Association
Wednesday November 12, 2003 10:33 AM

The multi-million pound bill for US President George Bush's visit must be met by the Government, the deputy chairman of the Metropolitan Police Authority has said.

A clear line of command must also be set down to ensure that the Commission and not the Americans are ultimately responsible for security, Richard Barnes said.

The estimated bill for policing during Mr Bush's time in London next week is £5 million, according to Mr Barnes."This should not fall on the ratepayers of London,"

...snip...

There have been reports that the US security services want to keep anti-war demonstrators away from the President.

..snip

"But protesters must be allowed to protest within the law, and peacefully and appropriately, and I hope that the president and his entourage will be aware of protests that occur."

1. Why should the people have to pay?Bush is nuts.
I do not think he will end up going and trying to find a reason not to.I do not think Bush will get a crrige ride through London with the Queen.

3. I listen to mass media news and no story of this yet.
Is it in American papers or are we still only able to get real news from other than the American media?

4. One smart move:
NOT letting the "Americans" be in charge of security. Can't you just imagine what THAT would look like!

:freak:

(Looking forward to appropriate protests)

6. Just to make me feel better ...
can you call us "citizens"! Not strictly true I know, but I loathe being called a "subject". :)

7. Umm
Being a British Citizen is different from being a British Subject.

British Citizens have the right to live permanently in the UK and leave and re-enter at any time, whilst British Subjects may not.

8. Request , UK DUers?
Will you post your protest experiences here? Will you invite others to post and share their observations from the protests? Our news will likely not show the protestors or not show much of them. Posting would be a way for some people here to hear you. I would love to hear/read what slogan you used on your sign. What people chant, How many people showed. Any details you could give. TIA

Gina
