By Ronald Brownstein, Times Staff Writer

Bush's ratings sink, weighed down by the Dubai firm uproar and discontent over Iraq.

WASHINGTON — Americans, by a greater than 3-1 margin, oppose the proposed deal that would allow a state-owned Arab firm to assume control of operations at several U.S. ports, a Los Angeles Times/Bloomberg poll has found.

In the new poll, more than three-fifths of those who oppose the deal gave Bush poor grades for his performance on terrorism; conversely, more than three-fourths of those who favor the transaction approved of his handling of the terrorist threat.

The Dubai deal faced opposition from virtually every broad segment of Americans. Overall, just 17% of those surveyed said they supported the agreement, whereas 58% opposed it; the rest said they did not know enough to express an opinion.

1. I have nothing against Arabs, I have nothing against Dubai,
I do have something against people who want to blow up buildings.

4. Ditto here. I see Arab Americans everyday and never think of them
as anything but part of our American family. I don't think to myself.."maybe he's a terrorist." Never! This Dubai deal is different. They do have ties with Al Qaida. That's just a fact. It's not about the color of their skin but the content of their character. Their character is untrustworthy. We never know at what time they will turn on us and allow dangerous contraband into our country.

2. Some people stuck on the persona
To some, he is just a fictional character, they refuse to see that in reality he is just a coward hiding behind the most powerful military in the world, stealing all America's future it has to offer. That is why there are some that still say he is doing a great job, refusing to see what is happening, they rely on faith alone.
