Japan Spots Chinese Submarine Off Coast

A Japanese patrol plane spotted a Chinese submarine near Japan's southernmost main island Wednesday, the first such sighting so close to the country's shores, the military said.

The attack submarine had surfaced and was heading west in international waters 25 miles off the coast of Satamisaki, a port town on Kyushu at 8 a.m., Japan's Navy said. It sailed through the Osumi strait between Kyushu and Tanegashima, a tiny southern Japanese island.

3. Spying on Japan?
I doubt it, but Tanegashima is to Japan what Cape Canaveral is to America. As I understand, the waters around it are closely monitored and controlled by the JDFNavy.

Big deal - NK subs apparantly do this all the time....

I'm sure that as the PRC's power and influence grows such sitings will be more common in rival nation's waters. I don't doubt that the Chinese have thier own "plans" for asia.

7. You are right about Tanegashima
And since China's getting into the space biz, it only seems natural that they would want to check up on the competition.
