Liberals counter GOP by forming recruitment group

Nov. 12, 2003  |  WASHINGTON (AP) -- In a battle of the political acronyms, Republicans have GOPAC and now liberals will have PROPAC.

GOPAC is the Republican organization created in 1979 that recruits and trains state and local political candidates. PROPAC is the latest answer from liberals, who acknowledge that conservatives have drawn ahead in identifying, recruiting and electing their type of candidate.

"Look at any general poll, we have majorities on these issues," said Gloria Totten, founder and executive director of the Progressive Majority, referring to issues such as health care, education and the environment. "But we can't keep saying the American people are with us while we're losing elections."
