British Police Anxious Before Bush Visit

By BETH GARDINER, Associated Press Writer

LONDON - Security worries are more serious for President Bush (news - web sites)'s upcoming trip to Britain than previous presidential visits, but some anti-war protesters may still be allowed to get close enough for Bush to see them, police said Wednesday.

Terror attacks around the world mean fears for the president's safety are greater than for his predecessors who visited London, said London police Deputy Assistant Commissioner Andy Trotter.

But Trotter emphasized that demonstrations against the Iraq (news - web sites) war and other Bush policies will go ahead, saying police would not use security as an excuse to spare Bush the embarrassment of seeing those who disagree with him.

"He could quite easily come into contact with demonstrators," Trotter said, explaining that some pedestrians would be allowed to stand along roads Bush travels on. "What would be extremely inappropriate would be for a large march to meet the convoy."

9. Thanks...I think.
Proof, once again, that a nation's leaders do not necessarily reflect the character of its people.

7. Me, too.
It's amazing that 227 years ago, the US rebelled against excessive taxation from King George of England. We gave him the boot, and now we look longingly back across the Atlantic, where they have more freedom than we have to express themselves.

I was only too well aware that the Niger uranium incident started in the UK which later moved west to the US, just as Bush was taking off for Africa. The Brits assailed their government over the "sexed up" documents which caused such an uproar. They hammered mercilessly on Blair over the past few months.

They are truly champions for their cause. Cheers!

8. I don't think massive protests will embarrass him.
The man is incapable of being embarrassed; he will instead be furious. Being embarrassed, to me at least, implies that you acknowledge that you have committed some gaffe, and Bush, being Bush, believes that he is always right.

The man is a sociopath. Protesters will bring him to rage, but not embarrassment.

10. I hope everyone in the crowd has a cell phone, so they can ring at him
It'd be great to see this in the future: people in his proximity making sure that they have mobile phones ready, so that when he approaches him, the rings will torment him.

(For those who don't know, this is a peeve of the little nothing.)

11. Why does the little bastard need security?
He just got done telling us that the world is a safer place today because of him and his policies...
Then he goes and hides back under his rock with Unca Dicky.

Well Georgie, I say, "Bring them on"!
